A Solemn Time for the Kenners

Hey there!

Sometimes I wish life could always be positive and happy, but as we all know, life has its ups and downs. This week happens to be one of the down ones. There isn't much to say this week, other than the hearts of the Kenner home are a bit heavier than usual. Our beloved milk cow, Ginger, got knocked down by her calf (who's nearly the same size as her) on Saturday and she was never able to get up. Her legs, now broken, prevented her from doing so. There's not much you can do for a downed cow, so we had to make the hard decision to put her down. Our sweet seven year old wanted to do something to help the family feel better about the decision, so he made this replica of Ginger.

This is just a summary of the relatively agonizing week as we've done research, consulted cattle farmers and vets, and had to baby her every few hours to make sure she didn't get injured more from the weight of her body pressing on her legs. I think it goes without saying that the authoring took a back burner this week.

I'm confident this will pass, and that we'll soon only remember the sweet memories of our dairy cow. Until then, we'll just take it one day at a time. Will we get another cow someday? Most likely, but we're going to take a break for a bit. Possibly we'll lean into the goats more. The future's a bit uncertain at the moment. All in all, I appreciate those of you who read the updates and wish you all a great week. Don't take the great things in your life for granted.

My Progress This Week

Since it's been two weeks from my last email until now, I did make some progress before it came to a screeching halt. I was able to finish the first draft of Orc Blooded (the origin short story of Garlan, the son of the villainous Orc King). I'll need to do some editing before I can put that before you, but know that it'll be ready in the next couple of months.

I also delved into the fifth book of the Hidden Heritage series, Elf Blooded. I'm only about 9,000 words into it, but already enjoying unpacking the mind of the half-elf, half-Asian, Lily. She's already proving a clever and feisty character and I can't wait to get to know her more by writing from her perspective.

Just a note that in my Ream Community (https://reamstories.com/dankenner), chapters 4 and 5 of Dwarf Blooded are now available. If you join the community (for a few dollars), you get to start reading the next story a whole six months before it comes out. What's not to like about that?!

Here's a free book for you!
