FREE Short Story and Preparing for Baby Animals

Hey there!

I can't believe we're already to the point where we need to prepare for baby animals. Spring was sprung on us much faster than years past. I'm going to blame that on getting older. All the more reason to push myself to get more books out!

First and foremost, we've collected the cleanest eggs we could find and popped them in the incubator. All it takes is 21 days in this sucker and then we'll have a whole bunch of baby chicks. Last year I managed to get a video of one of them hatching, so hopefully I'll be lucky this year.

On top of figuring out the baby chicks, our two remaining does are set to have their baby goats in the next week or two. It seems like just yesterday we had put them in the pen with the buck, but now we're here. Soon we'll get to enjoy not only the milk from our cow, Ginger, but also from the two goats. Coincidentally, for drinking, the goats' milk is much better. Cow milk is just more 'useful' since the cream actually separates.

On that note, we ended up having to dry off one of Ginger's udder quarters (yup! You can do that) so now we are just milking three of them. And somehow, oddly, her milk has gone up. Even though we've also gone down to just once a day milking (yay! No more staying up till ten doing milking and dishes!) But, despite that, we've weaned Mac off of bottles. He's less than thrilled about that but more than big enough to rely on hay and water. He really is a big baby, mooing at us when we are out there. Maybe some day he'll forget about the bottles.

My Progress This Week

I'm headlong into edits for the third book of The Hidden Heritage Series, Dwarf Blooded. As of now I'm 60% the first round, and I have to say, I'm pleasantly surprised by what I've done. It's comforting to me that each of my first drafts is getting cleaner and cleaner. Definitely not anywhere close to publish ready, but it feels a lot less rough than the others did. This story is from the perspective of a character you haven't met before in the books, which makes it even more intriguing.

I have a great surprise for you! I've released another short story to all those who simply follow me on my Ream. You can access that using the button below.

"After years of relentless invasion, humanity has finally found a way to fend off the mind-controlling aliens lurking beyond their city’s borders. A groundbreaking neural implant not only shields them from the extraterrestrial menace but also links minds, forging unprecedented connections between individuals.

But something has gone wrong. Deep within the technology designed to protect them, a sinister force awakens—one that distorts reality, unravels sanity, and leaves a trail of death in its wake. As chaos spreads, Gavin, a skilled brain surgeon responsible for the very implants meant to safeguard society, must confront the terrifying truth. Can he unravel the mystery before the entity claims more lives? Or will he become its next victim, trapped in a nightmare of his own making?"

Just a note that in my Ream Community (https://reamstories.com/dankenner), the first chapters of Dwarf Blooded have started coming out! Since there are about 24 weeks before its publish date, you get a new chapter every week until then! Yep, you heard that right. If you join the community (for a few dollars), you get to start reading the next story a whole six months before it comes out. What's not to like about that?!
