Hello ,
This is Jean, author of Alzheimer's Daughter and cofounder of AlzAuthors. When I published my memoir, my journey as both parents' caregiver had just ended and I had recently retired from a 22-year career as an elementary school teacher.
Now, nine years later, I'm leaning on age 70 and I'm so thankful that my husband and I are approaching 50 years of marriage.
My book was written as a reflection on being a daughter...a caregiver. I was drawn to similar books about caring for parents. But now I realize that time is passing and people my age are beginning to care for a spouse or in need of care themselves. I understand that either my husband or I will care for each other or at some point our children will begin to have thoughts about how to care for us.
For those reasons, recently I have become a passionate seeker of amazing spouse/caregiver memoirs.
I become emotional just thinking about today's featured book by Angie Buxton-King, The Magic Man and His Dementia Adventure.
This book is very appropriate as a Valentine post because Angie fills every page of her memoir with love for her husband, Graham, yet she does not hold back on the vivid reality of their situation as she cares for him until his last breath. AlzAuthors highly recommends Angie's book. Read a bit more detail below and click the link to read Angie's entire post on AlzAuthors.com, including links to her social media.
Thank you, Angie, for bravely sharing your story with the followers of AlzAuthors.

Angie tells us:
I hope that my book, The Magic Man and His Dementia Adventure, provides you with an insight into growing old or mature, making life choices that suit us better in the future, and planning, and managing finite resources. My book describes our own personal journey through dementia; donβt worry it will have laugh-aloud moments, magic moments, along with more thought-provoking moments.

February's read is "Be Brave: A Wife's Journey Through Caregiving" by Florrie Munat, a writer who cared for her husband with Lewy Body disease following a stroke. Unlike other book clubs we don't require you actually read the book, although, obviously, that makes for a better discussion. But if you're short on time and would like to meet the author first you are welcome to join us.
Here's the schedule through April:
- February 27th 7pm EST: Florrie Munat β Be Brave, a Wifeβs Journey Through Caregiving
- March 26th 7pm EST: Ruth Stevensβ Stage Seven, a novel
- April 30th 7pm EST: A gathering of poets for National Poetry Month: featuring Sherri Levine, Stealing Flowers from the Neighbors; Sue Fagalde Lick, Gravel Road Ahead; Daniel Potts, MD, Bringing Art to Life; Margaret Stawowy, co-editor of Storms of the Inland Sea, an anthology with Jim Cokas
