Hello ,
Lori La Bey is the author of this weekโs featured book, โBetty the Bald Chicken โ Lessons in How to Care.โ
In her words, the idea โcame to me in a dream, about twenty-five years into my family's journey with dementia. My mother Dorothy lived a total of thirty years with the disease and as they say, dementia is not a disease of one. Itโs a disease of society.โ
โBetty the Bald Chickenโ is much more than a childrenโs book about dementia and Alzheimerโs disease. It is a story about love and acceptance. It addresses feelings of not belonging or fitting in, being misunderstood and ignored. I would venture a guess that most of us have felt one or more of these emotions in our lives. And, as caregivers, we may have also watched as our loved with one with dementia was discounted, talked over or simply ignored.
Lori shares: โBetty the Bald Chicken teaches people of all ages we have more in common with others than we are different. The questions in the back of the book help readers and listeners talk about the ripple effect our choices have on ourselves and others; even those we don't know.โ

A Glimpse Into Dementia from Peter Berry
In this less than two minute snippet from BBC Radio 4, AlzAuthor Peter Berry, who lives well in the UK with early onset Alzheimer's, gives us a glimpse into his memory and its challenges. Sue Mitchell interviewed Peter on December 31st as part of her documentary "Finding My Father." Peter is a powerful advocate for those living with dementia, speaking across England at conferences and summits, appearing in the media, and raising money for dementia charities through cycling challenges. From his website: Peter has a vivid way of viewing his dementia which helps others to understand. He describes his videos as "opening the curtain that surrounds his dementia and letting people into his world." He is the author of Slow Puncture: Living Well With Dementia and Walk With Me: Musings Through the Dementia Fog with his friend and co-author Deb Bunt.

We have so much to learn ...
The process of finding new treatments for Alzheimer's disease is one of trial and error โ and every "failed" trial generates invaluable new data to help researchers and drug developers understand what works, what doesn't, and why. In this Live Talk, weโll meet drug trial participant Bill Sasse, who was a participant in Eli Lillyโs clinical trial of experimental monoclonal antibody drug solanezumab. In March of 2023, solanezumab ultimately failed to hit its benchmarks in slowing cognitive decline and the trial was discontinued. Sasse, whose father died of Alzheimerโs, had the unique experience of participating in a clinical trial for a MAB drug without having any symptoms of cognitive decline. With his wife as his trial partner, he participated in the solanezumab trial for eight years before it was announced that the clinical trial had failed. RSVP to this talk to learn more about the clinical trial experience with MAB drugs.
