Author Shelly Calcagno and The Longest Goodbye
Aug 09, 2023 11:13 am
Hello ,
Greetings from New Hampshire! This week I came across the beautiful image and quote shared below that I felt really represented the hope of a dementia caregiving journey. As a daughter of a father that walked the Alzheimerโs path, I often looked for glimmers of hope and joy when we were together. I made it my signature line when signing books to say "embrace the simple joys", because that is so much of what this is all about. Our featured author this week, Shelly Calcagno, did just that in her beautiful telling of her motherโs journey with Alzheimerโs in her book, The Longest Goodbye. Shelly made an effort to seek out moments of joy to brighten her days and has so much hope and love in her story when all seems lost like it often does on this journey. She has a refreshing honesty and beautiful outlook and her story is a wonderful addition to our AlzAuthors collection. ~Andrea Couture

The Longest Goodbye
by Shelly Calcagno
Shelly tells us:
I learned that in the middle of our pain we still had so much to be thankful for, and I was determined to look for joy in what often felt like a helpless journey.
I hope that my book encourages families and loved ones facing the giant mountain of an Alzheimerโs diagnose, wondering how they will ever have the strength to make the journey ahead. In my book, I write about the significance of moments, and how I learned how to grab onto all the little gifts that were there, despite the pain.
If my story can help others walking that shaky road between love and grief, while helping them hold on in the middle - then Iโve honoured my motherโs life well and our journey has had purpose. There is always hope in 'The Longest Goodbye'.
