Author Ann Margaret Johns and her heartfelt memoir, "Counting Steps"
Jul 26, 2023 11:21 am
Hello ,
My name is Andrea Couture and I’m writing to you today as the newest AlzAuthors Acquisitions Editor and the author of the memoir, Embracing What Remains. Though my memoir was released in 2021, I’m currently in the process of recording the audiobook and look forward to releasing that format to my listeners. An audiobook is a wonderful way for our busy caregivers to experience our stories as I was recently told in a caregiver support group. It gives them the ability to multi task while still having the time to read.
I’ve had the pleasure of reading and approving a few recent submissions to our organization and I am proud to welcome author Ann Margaret Johns and her beautiful memoir Counting Steps. Ann Margaret’s memoir is a heartfelt and honest story of her mother’s journey with Alzheimer’s and I felt especially connected to it as my memoir tells the story of my father’s journey with Alzheimer’s. Ann Margaret’s story will have you feeling all of the emotions of a caregiver and a daughter while honoring her special relationship with her mother.

Counting Steps: The Alzheimer's Journey of Pat in the Hat
by Ann Margaret Johns
Ann Margaret tells us:
Nothing prepared me for what life would be like caring for a person with dementia. My mother spent the last four years of her life battling Alzheimer’s disease. I spent the last four years of her life learning about dementia and caregiving. Some of what I learned was from internet research, some from books, and some from talking with medical professionals; but most of what I learned was by trial and error.
It felt as if I was on a deserted island. I wished I knew just one person who understood what I was going through, but there was no such person. I was scared and alone. No one should have to experience what I experienced, so I felt compelled to help others. I took the best of what I learned and wrote ‘Counting Steps’.

Our Most Recent Podcast
Most of us in this space are all too familiar with the struggles of caregiving, and meal time is no exception. The planning, shopping, prepping, and preparing of quality nutritious foods can overburden our already stressed out lives. We may resort to quick solutions, which, though convenient, may be detrimental to our goal of living a healthy lifestyle. In this week's podcast, occupational therapist Melissa Bernstein and her geriatrician husband, David Bernstein, MD, tell us how to make meal prep fun for everyone, including our care recipients. When this dynamic duo retired, they collaborated on an innovative approach to caregiving for those with neurodegenerative diseases, combining Melissa's culinary skills with David's "Power of Five Formula." They've revolutionized the way caregivers provide meals for their loved ones, and offer a wealth of advice for caregivers to use in the kitchen and beyond.
