When I was a caregiver in my early 40s, I used to bring my daughter Sydney who was a toddler at the time to see my mother at her care home. My daughter was too young to understand Alzheimer's, but she was able to connect with my mom as we took walks outside and played simple games.

These visits left me both broken and whole.

Sometimes my mother would pat Sydney on the head and say, "Who's this little boy? Inside, I felt ragged because my mom didn't fully understand that we were her family. But my heart was also filled with warmth, knowing we had brought her a few moments of joy and connection.

Visiting my mom at her care home when my daughter was a toddler.

This is one of the reasons I wrote my memoir, Motherhood: Lost and Found. I wanted to help others understand the depth and tangle of emotions that come with being a caregiver. Back in 2017, I was invited to become part of the management team of AlzAuthors, and a few years later, I joined with Jean Lee and Susan Landeis to create the concept for our Custom Caregiver Collections.

As a writer and a lover of literature, I know the value of good books, how they touch the heart and inspire us to be our best selves. These custom libraries bring joy and connection.

How I wish Sydney and I could have had a selection of books from which to borrow -- books written for those with dementia that my daughter and I could sit and read with my mom, children's books that would help Sydney understand the confusion in my mother's mind, books for me to take home and read that would help me know I wasn't alone as a caregiver.

Each time we deliver a Custom Caregiver Collection to another care home, senior center, memory cafe or other location where people are hungry for education, support and encouragement, it brings me great joy. I believe my mother is also looking down on me with a smile.

This month, if you make a donation to our Custom Caregiver Collections, it will be TRIPLED, thanks to two anonymous donors.
