Hello ,

Exposure to family caregiving early in life can be the catalyst to a lifelong career, as it was for Sherri Snelling. Her caregiving experience started when she was a teen, watching her mother care for her parents and assisting as needed. This led her to pursue a career supporting family caregivers, eventually becoming a gerontologist specializing in neuroscience, brain health, and Alzheimerโ€™s. She has a wealth of media experience and is well known in the caregiving community. She's written two caregiver guides: A Cast of Caregivers and Me Time Monday: The Weekly Wellness Plan to Find Balance and Joy for a Busy Life.

Sherri says:

By breaking life into seven areas of wellness (Physical, Emotional, Social, Intellectual, Environmental, Financial and Spiritual), I write about small things you can do in these areas combining neuroscience and nature to create life-balance and more joy, even if challenged with the time poverty of caregiving responsibilities.

May's Book Club Read

Join us on May 28th at 7pm EST when we discuss Somebody Stole My Iron: A Family Memoir of Dementia by AlzAuthors founder and manager Vicki Tapia.

imageDescription: Navigating the waters of dementia can be frightening, unleashing a myriad of emotions for everyone involved. After Vicki Tapiaโ€™s mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, followed closely by her father with Parkinsonโ€™s disease-related dementia, she struggled to find practical, helpful information to light her way. Somebody Stole My Iron began as a diary to help her cope, but emerged as a road map for others. It offers a glimpse into her family's life as they rode the waves of dementia, sometimes sailing, other times capsizing. This engaging memoir offers useful information from experts within the field of Alzheimer's research, personal lessons the author learned along the way, and ideas and tips for managing the day-to-day ups and downs of dementia. Read Vicki's AlzAuthors post.

Remember: it is not necessary to read the book to attend the discussion.

We have so much to learn โ€ฆ

Friday, May 17th at 12 p.m. PT/3 p.m. ET: While Alzheimerโ€™s disease isnโ€™t curable, research shows it may be preventable or postponable through lifestyle factors like diet. Yet with so many types of diets emerging, itโ€™s hard to know whatโ€™s a fad and what lifestyle changes can actually support brain health. USCโ€™s Dr. Hussein Yassine joins Being Patient live talks to answer questions about how diet affects brain health.

Yassine is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, Keck School of Medicine of USC. His research is focused on the intersection of neurology and nutritional sciences. At Yassine Lab, his team studies how lipids, particularly omega-3 fatty acids, affect Alzheimerโ€™s disease. He is also the director of USC Center for Personalized Brain Health, which was launched in 2023 to build research on the APOE gene and the role of fatty acids in the brain to advance personalized health to cut Alzheimerโ€™s risk.

RSVP to learn more about how diet impacts the brain, and, ultimately, Alzheimerโ€™s risk. WHEN: Friday, May 17th at 12 p.m. PT/3 p.m. ET. WHERE: Being Patientโ€™s Facebook page
