Eilon Caspi takes on the challenge of aggression in dementia
Nov 30, 2022 1:01 am
Hello ,
With Thanksgiving in the rearview mirror, the holiday season is now fully upon us, its rush of expectations and obligations causing distraction and anxiety on multiple levels. As we prepare for the festivities, let's keep in mind our own limitations - physically, emotionally, and financially. It's important to not wear ourselves out, to maintain realistic expectations not only of ourselves but of others, and to keep in mind the real reason for the season. It's easy to get caught up in the hoopla and lose sight of what's most important: our health and wellbeing, and that of our loved ones.
Remember to take time to rest. Eat something good. Drink plenty of fluids. Examine each invitation and obligation carefully, and decline those that don't suit you - for any reason. Cling to the traditions that bring you joy, and save those that don't work right now for the future. It's okay to create new traditions, new ways of seeing and doing things that brighten our holidays without overtaxing us. It's also okay to say "no", and "not now," and "maybe later." You can always change your mind if your situation becomes more flexible. These days belong to us, to use as we see fit to serve our families, our desires, and needs.
We wish you the happiest, healthiest holiday season.

Eilon Caspi, Ph.D. has devoted his life to understanding dementia and those who live with it, especially those in long-term care. He started working in the aging field in 1994 as a nurse aide in a nursing home, where his grandfather lived, in Israel. Since then, he has worked as a social worker, consultant, applied researcher, educator, author, documentary film director, and elder care advocate. His research focuses on the prevention of abuse, neglect, resident-to-resident incidents, financial exploitation, and theft of opioid pain medications in long-term care homes. His passion is bridging research and care practice. This is an important book for those working in long-term care and those who have entrusted their loved one to a care home.
Eilon writes:
The real but rarely told story is that these people are living with a serious cognitive disability due to a brain disease, and that they are doing their best β using their remaining cognitive and other abilities β to cope with situations that are often very frustrating, distressing, upsetting, and frightening to them.
