Hello ,

imageThe podcast is back! Well, it's getting back. I returned after a two-month break for caregiving and its aftermath last week with the replay of our poetry event, and this week kicks off new author interviews. When we paused the pod, I canceled all upcoming interviews and we filled in the month of June with new author posts, so the next pod will play on July 5, after which we'll resume our biweekly schedule. I've also taken on a partner! Christy Byrne Yates has joined me as co-host and co-producer. Together we'll interview our authors and publish the interviews on the podcast and on our YouTube channel. I'm also getting back out on the podcast trail to introduce more caregivers and others concerned about dementia to our authors and resources. Stay tuned for future episodes! In the meantime, discover the wisdom and experience in the 90 interviews already published. To date, we have had almost 90,000 downloads! Happy listening.

Environmental factors, such as exposure to toxic substances, can contribute to cognitive decline, potentially leading to dementia. These toxins can cause harm to brain cells and disrupt their normal functioning, negatively impacting an individual's memory and cognitive abilities. As more research emerges about the potential links between toxicity and dementia, its important for caregivers and those affected by dementia to stay informed about the latest scientific discoveries. This knowledge may offer new solutions for preventive care, treatment, and management of the disease. During her discussion with Marianne Sciucco, Sandra Strauss shared her personal experiences dealing with her husband's dementia. She reveals how years of misdiagnoses eventually led to the discovery that her husband's condition was, in fact, Lewy Body dementia, partly influenced by environmental factors. Strauss emphasizes the importance of finding answers and understanding the potential sources of cognitive decline, such as exposure to toxins, in order to better manage and potentially even reverse the disease in some cases.

After writing a memoir about caring for their mother with Alzheimerโ€™s, friends encouraged sisters Lori Aden and Sheila Parsley to write a childrenโ€™s book. They soon realized there was too much information for only one book, so they wrote a series of three books describing behaviors for Early, Middle and Late-Stages of Alzheimerโ€™s disease. They chose to use a โ€œwhimsical dragon familyโ€ to make the subject less scary and to avoid alienating anyone by using a character that didnโ€™t look like them.

Lori and Sheila share: We wanted to show the love between a grandchild and grandparent as well as the truly emotional feelings that can result from odd behavior happening during this disease. We didnโ€™t shy away from showing sadness or anger, or embarrassing topics. Finally, we wrote two versions so that families could choose between a โ€œGrandma is Acting Funnyโ€ or a โ€œGrandpa is Acting Funnyโ€ series. They both are the same, with some minor differences in wording.
