Susie Singer Carter Explores Dementia in Film and Podcast
Mar 30, 2022 10:01 am
Dear AlzAuthor,
Sharing our stories makes us strong.
This message has been at the heart of AlzAuthors since its inception. We believe storytelling is an effective way to break the silence and stigma that often accompanies a dementia diagnosis. So many of the books in our collection were written to share what we've learned on our dementia journeys, to provide guidance for others, to honor our loved ones. But the stories are not enough. We need to push our stories out into the world, using every available tool at our hands, to reach out to caregivers and others who need to know that they are not alone, and that help exists through our shared stories.
Beginning with the first campaign we launched in June 2015, we've used social media as our main vehicle for publicizing our stories. Social media is the most effective way to spread our message. As a group of 300+ authors we have great power to not only share our messages across vast platforms but to raise our voices together to share our stories. Through social media, whichever platform you choose to use, you can magnify all of our messages either by:
- retweeting another author's tweet,
- sharing an AlzAuthors post on Facebook or LinkedIn,
- using @AlzAuthors so we can see your tweets and retweet them,
- including other authors in your own messages,
- or using #AlzAuthors to call attention to your message, making it easier for others to find and share them.
Remember: We are stronger together, elevating not only our own work but that of our fellow authors in this mission to raise awareness of Alzheimer's and dementia and to reach those needing guidance and support on their own journeys.

Introducing Susie Singer Carter: Exploring Dementia Through Film and Podcasting
Susie Singer Carter reacted to her motherโs Alzheimerโs diagnosis with disbelief, denial, and finally acceptance. She learned to rely on their strengths to navigate their journey, often discovering joy in the process. A filmmaker, she tells her story in the award-winning short film My Mom and the Girl. An advocate, she provides support to caregivers through her podcast, Love Conquers ALZ.
She says:
Of course, my motherโs disease has been challenging. But it has also been positively life altering and, dare I say, joyous. While Alzheimerโs continues to relentlessly rob my mother of her precious memories and skills, it has been powerless when it comes to her soul.

On The Podcast
Lori La Bey is known as a visionary when it comes to dementia care. Prior to becoming the founder of an international advocacy group and media outlet for dementia, she cared for her own mother who lived with the condition for 30 years. Confounded by the lack of resources available to caregivers, she decided there had to be a better way, and launched Alzheimerโs Speaks, giving a voice to those who have been impacted by a dementia diagnosis. In this episode, we discuss what she learned through decades of caregiving, how she built her amazing global platform, the choice we all face when confronted with a dementia diagnosis, and the benefit of looking at dementia through the lens of โsafe, happy, and pain-free.โ Start listening!

In Memoriam: Richard L. Morgan, Ph. D.
We were saddened to hear of the recent passing of Dr. Richard L. Morgan, co-author of No Act of Love Is Ever Wasted: The Spirituality of Caring for Persons with Dementia with Jane Thibault, Ph.D. Drawing on 60 years of experience as a pastor, hospice chaplain, volunteer, and a friend to dying persons, he also wrote At the Edge of Life: Conversations when Death Is Near, to offer perspective and counseling for people coping with a family member, friend or patient who is approaching the time of death. We have truly lost a good friend to Alzheimer's and dementia caregivers. You may read his AlzAuthors post here.

An opportunity from Jane Mullins
From Dr. Jane M. Mullins, dementia nurse consultant and author of Finding the Light in Dementia: A Guide for Families, Friends and Caregivers:
I am developing an online course to build on my book, for families, friends and caregivers. This will provide them with up to date, easy to access films, presentations and audios to help support them in all stages of their dementia journey with lifetime access to use, as and when they need it. This includes interviews with people living with dementia, family caregivers and leading professionals and researchers in the field. I am hoping to have some quick tips films and short films with people, such as yourselves, who have been through this experience and would like to offer your insights to help support people. As you know, it is so powerful knowing you arenโt alone and real-life stories really help.
If you are keen to contribute, please contact me at jane@duetcare.co.uk and we can arrange a Zoom call. I have a number of themes and ideas Iโd like to cover but I would rather it be a more organic approach, where, what springs to mind about what worked, what didnโt etc. would be really helpful. If youโre too shy to be on film, we could create your contribution as a podcast. In return for your generosity, we can add your book details on each resource.
