Julie Annette Bennett pens moving spouse/caregiver memoir
Jun 28, 2022 7:28 pm
Dear AlzAuthor,
We continue to follow our goal of gathering books written from personal experience with Alzheimer's and dementia to light the darkness for those currently on the journey.
An important dream for this journey has come true. We've always wanted to bring your real books to real people in real places. Now our new initiative is on the move, full steam ahead.
Our friend, Lori La Bey of Alzheimer's Speaks radio recently gifted a Custom Caregiver Collection to a Continuing Care Community in Minnesota. Click this link to hear an excerpt from an interview:
Also, here's a short video showing the Custom Caregiving Collections coming to life. https://youtu.be/8Oyod_MQ5fo
Please visit our Custom Caregiving Collection webpage to order your own curated collection or to donate to this initiative.
We'll reveal more presentations in future weeks.

Introducing this week's featured author: Julie Annette Bennett
Julie Annette Bennett, shares the details of becoming a caregiver to her husband, Scott, through a heart transplant, aspergillus pneumonia, and Alzheimer's disease in her gripping memoir, The Phoenix Man.
Julie writes:
When Scott collapsed in the Target parking lot on March 4, 2007, I believed he had died. As I called 911, I thought, Oh my God! Iโm not ready. Please donโt take him yet. Please, God, donโt let him die! That moment in time began a medical journey no one should ever have to live through. Together, we faced uncertainties that would test Scottโs strength of spirit and fill me with the courage that would guide me as I became a caregiver for the man I love.

On the Podcast
โIf thereโs one thing worse than Alzheimerโs, itโs ignorance of the disease,โ says Martin Schreiber, author of My Two Elaines: Learning, Coping, and Surviving as an Alzheimerโs Caregiver, where he tells the story of his caregiving journey with his wife, who recently succumbed to her illness. Written with Milwaukee author Cathy Breitenbucher, the book was recognized by Caring.com as one of its Best Caregiving Books of 2017. Initially self-published, it was recently published by Harper Horizon. Martin is the former governor of Wisconsin and an award-winning crusader for Alzheimerโs caregivers and persons with dementia. In this episode, we discuss the all-around ignorance surrounding dementia, Martyโs special message to men caring for their wives, the value of therapeutic fibbing and redirection, and the realities of moving a spouse into assisted living.

Changes to our Author Schedule
In July we will implement a slight change to our format. We will relax our pace a bit by:
- offering new books and resources biweekly instead of weekly
- and alternating with a new podcast
You will continue to receive the weekly email spotlighting these authors and their stories.
In addition, we will continue to offer our live programs and plan to grow our YouTube channel.
We will take a much needed hiatus the last two weeks in July, so there will be neither a new post nor a podcast during that time.
We remain committed to bringing you the best resources to support your journey through Alzheimer's and dementia as well as growing exciting new initiatives to elevate our authors' work.

Alzheimer's And Dementia Caregiving: Podcast Recommendations
Five podcast episodes according to a theme,
each week curated by a different person.
CURATOR
Marianne Sciucco, founder of AlzAuthors
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS THEME?
People caring for loved ones with dementia are often overwhelmed, confused, and exhausted. They have little time to explore available resources to guide them on their journeys. Podcasts are an excellent, easy, and portable way to obtain knowledge, guidance, and support. All of these podcasts are hosted by women who have provided care to a loved one with dementia, and include: Pippa Kelly, Rosanne Corcoran, Susie Singer Carter, and Bobbie Carducci.
Marianne curated this list for us in honor of Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month.
