Hockey Canada Update on the BCHL
The British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) announced its decision to break away from Hockey Canada and become an independent league starting from June 1. In response, Hockey Canada sent a letter to its members outlining the consequences for participating in unsanctioned leagues. According to the letter, any player or coach involved with a non-sanctioned team after September 30 will be ineligible to participate in Hockey Canada-sanctioned activities for the rest of the season, even if they are released by their non-sanctioned team. This includes being considered for national team selection or attending high-performance activities.
The BCHL sought greater autonomy in areas like player recruiting, which prompted their decision to separate from Hockey Canada. They want to sign 16- and 17-year-old players from other provinces without requiring them to relocate. However, leaving Hockey Canada means the BCHL is no longer covered by its insurance plan, so the league is working on securing its own insurance deal. The BCHL's departure may also impact their ability to recruit referees and linesmen who are affiliated with Hockey Canada. While Hockey Canada expressed its intention to work with BC Hockey and provide opportunities for participants, the letter's contents were not explicitly mentioned in their official statement.
BC Hockey CEO Cam Hope mentioned the possibility of creating another Junior A league under Hockey Canada's umbrella to replace the BCHL, but no timeline was provided. The BCHL has been vocal about its dissatisfaction with the recruiting restrictions imposed by Hockey Canada, particularly in regards to signing players from other provinces without requiring their families to relocate to British Columbia.

What should I do the moment I get signed?
- Set goals ✅: Reflect on your strengths and weaknesses as a player and set specific goals for yourself. Whether it's improving a specific skill, earning more ice time, or contributing to the team's success, having clear objectives will help you stay focused and motivated throughout the season.
- Have a summer workout training program in place 🏋️: Continue to exercise regularly and maintain your conditioning throughout the off-season. Prepare yourself mentally & physically for training camp.
- Have a winning mindset 🧠: Go into camp with a strong and positive attitude. Prove to the coaches that they made the right decision and that you belong there.
