Tip of the Week
Playing Jr. A hockey can be an amazing experience; that being said, there are a few traps you need to watch out for and be aware of. The most common pitfall is living like a Sr. Citizen.
Due to the sudden increase in freedom after completing high school, many players don't know what to do with all their free time. So, they fill their new found time by watching movies, playing video games, and going out. Now, I'm not saying that these things are inherently bad; they have their time and place, but filling your entire free time with these activities isn't optimal and often makes you develop bad habits.
Luckily, some programs are aware of this problem and counter it with a very structured environment to keep their players busy. However, not all programs do this, and it's up to you at that point to ensure you maintain proper structure in your life.
To help you out, here's a list of things you can do to ensure you're being productive with your time and working towards becoming your best self during your time in Jr. Hockey:
- Show up to the rink early and warmup/workout
- Study for the SAT or ACT, then take the test
- Take part-time university courses
- Get a job
- Volunteer (youth hockey, schools, hospitals...anywhere really)
- Start a new hobby or side hustle
- Help around your billet's house
Whatever you decide to do, a good rule of thumb is to do productive things in the day, and then do the relaxing things at night.
