Tip of the Week
How do I know if a coach is actually interested in me? This is probably the most common question we get from players & parents. Therefore, to help you guys out, we created a list of things to look for when you're talking with coaches in order to help you better gauge their level of interest.
- Clarity: Coaches who are interested in you and want to sign you will usually tell you. For example, they'll say: "I see you as a top 6 F in my lineup next year, how would you like to come play here?" Now if a coach isn't that interested, they might say something like this: "we have a very competitive league and guys have to fight for their spots in the lineup." They could also say: "You can come to camp and we'll go from there." All in all, if a coach really wants you, he'll be clear about it and won't waste your time.
- Response Time: If a coach consistently responds to you promptly, this is a good sign. If they take weeks to respond, or sometimes don't respond at all, chances are that they aren't that interested in you.
- Who Reaches out first: If a coach is usually the one who initiates communication, asking what your plans are for next year, or even better, convincing you to sign with them, then that's a great sign. On the other hand, if you're always the one reaching out to them and they never seem to give you a straight answer, then that might mean that their level of interest isn't that high.
- Forms: Although there are some exceptions to this, if a coach tells you to simply fill out a rookie camp or recruitment form, this isn't a great sign. If they can't even be bothered to talk to you and simply dismiss you to filling out a form, that means they don't see you as a good enough prospect to invest their time on.
Just a final note, these guidelines are general, and there are some exceptions to them; that being said, they are a great way to read between the lines and determine how interested coaches are in you. This crucial skill will help you save time and hone in on the programs who actually want you.
