Newsletter - Advancement Hockey Advising

Jan 26, 2021 2:36 am

Good afternoon ,

Here's our newsletter for the week. As always, we try to offer you the most value possible while keeping things short & sweet. Feel free to skip ahead to whatever section you like.

Tip of the Week

Players often ask me what they need to do to get noticed and make a team. My advice is always very simple: Be so good they can't ignore you. That means having spectacular attitude, mindset, discipline, work ethic, & skill, to the point where the coach has no choice but to take you on their team because you're so much better than the rest of your competition.

Now you might be asking yourself, how exactly do I do that? How do I get to that level? The answer is to continuously improve your systems. What do I mean by systems? Systems are the set of actions you do on a day to day basis, or in other words, the current set of habits you've acquired from past experience. Now why is this important? Well, because systems generate results. Contrary to popular belief, we don't rise to the level of our goals or motivation, we fall to the level of our systems. That's why practice is so important, because it's by consistently practicing a certain set of skills that they eventually become second nature, which then allows you to start practicing a different and more advanced set of skills.

For example, why do you think Connor McDavid is so fast? Of course, talent has some role to play, but that's not the whole story. McDavid didn't just get fast overnight, he had to put countless hours of time practicing his craft, slowly improving every day by mastering a skill and moving on to a more advanced skill. He consistently performed habits along the lines of '10 full ice sprints a day', which later progressed to '10 1v1 burn the D wide drills every day'. McDavid performed (and continues to do so to this day) a set of daily habits that allowed him to consistently improve and become a player that makes burning NHL Defensemen wide look almost effortless.

So, wrapping everything up, my challenge to you is to think about and write down the habits you can start doing (or stop doing) that will help you get closer to your goals. From there, hold yourself accountable and start doing them so you can eventually become someone who's so good that others can no longer ignore.
