Tip of the Week

Naturally, we all want to play for the best team (and league) we possibly can. That being said, playing for the best possible organization isn't always the right choice. Too often, players sign with elite teams and soon find themselves on the 4th line or even out of the lineup on a regular basis. Unfortunately, this is a bad situation for multiple reasons; it wastes the player's limited time in hockey, it stunts their development, and worst of all, it usually kills their confidence. Instead of chasing the best teams, a better strategy is to consider teams that really want you, and then sign with the best team among those options.

Let's use an example to explain. Let's say you have several teams interested in you; Team A in the BCHL, Team B in the AJHL, Team C in the CCHL, & Team D in the USPHL Premier. Team A (BCHL) & Team B (AJHL) both offer you a spot, but they inform you that you'll be out of the lineup most games. On the other hand, Team C (CCHL) & Team D (USPHL Premier) really want you, and both promise that you'll be a top 6 F and get a ton of playing time. Which organization would you choose? Of course, the smart choice would be to pick Team C (CCHL) because they are the best team (in the best league) out of the teams that want you.

The example above may seem obvious, but so many players make the mistake of signing with great teams that don't really want them, which ends up costing them significantly. Remember this, when deciding which option to choose, first determine which teams really want you, then sign with the best team among those options.
