Newsletter - Advancement Hockey Advising

Jan 20, 2021 1:01 am

Good afternoon ,

Here's our newsletter for the week. As always, we try to offer you the most value possible while keeping things short & sweet. Feel free to skip ahead to whatever section you like.

Tip of the Week

Like anything, not all family advising companies & advisors are created equal. Some will give you consistent bad advice, some will take your money and run, and some will even harm your career. Therefore, it's important to know the key attributes to look for when choosing an advisor.

  • Playing Experience: Look for an advisor that has played at the level you want to play. You wouldn't take math advice from someone who never passed math in high school right? The same thing applies to advisors. If your goal is to play college hockey, you shouldn't take advice from 'advisors' who have never played at that level.
  • Positive Reviews: Before signing with an advisor, do your research and ask around to see what people actually think of them. By seeing the opinions of a few unbiased people, you should start getting a good idea whether their service is worthwhile or not. If you can't find any in-person or online reviews, ask the advisor if they can provide a few referrals. If they can't, that's a HUGE RED FLAG and you should immediately look elsewhere. Overall, see what people think before committing to an advisor.
  • Chemistry: To determine if I have good chemistry with an individual/organization, I ask myself this question: Is this someone/something I want others to know I'm associated with? If I'm hesitant when answering this question, chances are that this individual/organization isn't the best fit for me. You should ask yourself this same question when considering to hire a family advisor.
  • Honesty: Are they truthful when you talk to them or are they lifting your hopes up by selling you highly unrealistic dreams? (ex: Guarantees a Boston College Full Ride) Many 'advisors' will make all sorts of false promises to make a sale; beware of this type of behavior. I always tell myself this: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Reasonable Response Time: You'd be surprised with the amount of advisors that will take weeks to respond, or even worse, not respond, when you need them (I know because it happened to me in the past). Here's a good rule of thumb to follow: Do they answer you within 24h on a consistent basis?
  • Solid Background Check: Seems silly, but we've seen 'advisors' that have extensive criminal records. Again, you can avoid this by doing your research.

We just scratched the surface of this topic, which is why we're going to release a more in-depth YouTube video in the near future.
