Question of the Week

Q: What's the biggest difference between the men & women's hockey NCAA recruiting process?

A: Although men & women's hockey have quite a few similarities, the differences really start to show once the NCAA recruiting process begins. On the women's side, things are a bit more simple; they typically play either AAA or prep hockey, and from there, NCAA coaches recruit them and they start playing at the college level after high school or their post-grad year. For men, the process often has an extra step: junior hockey. High-end NCAA D1 programs will often recruit elite athletes while they are playing AAA or prep hockey, but will often expect them to play several years of Jr. Hockey before attending their college program. As for all other college hockey programs, they typically recruit players straight out of Jr. Hockey when they are between the ages of 18-20 years old. Of course, there are exceptions to this, but typically, these are the differences you'll see between the men & women's college hockey recruiting process.
