A hot microphone and a very nervous novelist

The dictation experiment is a bumpy process, but I'm sharing a snippet anyway..

The Dictation-Experiment Snippet & a Teaser from Rory's Story

Hello ,

It turns out that facing a hot microphone is equally intimidating as facing a blank page when it comes to writing a novel. My dictation-writing experiment has gotten underway, albeit with a slow stuttering start.

I need practice and I also need privacy--though even by myself I feel a tiny bit self-conscious talking the novel.(and I haven't even tried a steamy scene yet!) But it's like anything else super new and different when I first try it--I'm terrible at it! Lol! So far.

But never fear, I'm keeping my promise to share a snippet from my dictation-writing experiment twos week.

You be the judge, but my learning curve may be steeper than I thought. Luckily, I remain undaunted. Perseverance is my middle name. Call me SPQ.

At SQ's House

I should talk about halloween, but we only had three trick-or-treaters, and though they were adorable, I was disappointed we didn't have more kids come around. Not just because I'm now stuck with extra candy, but I truly enjoy seeing the kids out and about enjoying the night all dressed up in some inventive costumes.

We didn't dress up or go to any costume parties--haven't done that in years though I'd love to. Ever since we had kids Halloween has been all about the them. Maybe I should revive my Halloween spirit next year and dress up...🧅🧙‍♀️🧟

Did you dress up for Halloween this year? 🧅

Dictation Experiment Snippet - Liam: the Jennings Brothers

This dictation snippet was *cleaned up* from the raw word-for-word version. The original included a few misunderstood words and missing or mistaken punctuation. Also, I had to eliminate my speaking errors such as repeating myself, stumbling over words and flat-out silly non-sentences. Let's just say, I'm going to need lots more practice at dictating--but at least it'll be entertaining along the way. Here it is:

Mia

“You’re a better driver than I am,” I don’t know why I say something so inane except to distract myself.

“Maybe, maybe not, but I sure like driving your car. This baby is a cool ride compared to my hand-me-down rust-bucket.”

“You’re still driving Patrick's old red pick-up?”

Liam darts his smirky smile at me. My stomach takes a dip and a whirl. It shouldn’t. I should be over it, shouldn’t be feeling the crush. Maybe it’s not him. There's plenty of reason for my nerves besides the remnants of an old attraction—even if his recent kisses were admittedly hotter than any kisses I can remember.

The quickly approaching dinner with my parents and Frank jangles my nerves every time it sneaks past the formidable distraction of Liam sitting in the driver’s seat of my Mercedes E350 exuding his… whatever powerful air he has going on. We’re getting close to my house and the implications are starting to hit me.

“Maybe I should’ve warned my parents that we were coming, that you were coming, I mean.” Shit. When was the last time I was tongue tied? I speak on air for live audiences on a regular basis and this doesn't happen.

Liam taps my thigh with his hand in a friendly way, although his touch sends flirtatious vibrations skittering along my skin like like those sexy moves I might have dreamed about once or twice back in the day.

“No, you’re doing the right thing. If you called you Dad, you would have argued on the phone. Given him a chance to tell you no. And besides, I’m looking forward to this dinner. I’m looking forward to the surprise. It’s always fun.”

I laugh and there's slight edge of nerves in the sound, a small shake that I hope he doesn't hear it. But I laughed anyway.

And then I see the driveway up ahead. I close my mouth and marshal my emotions as he pulls in and stops the car.

TEASER from Rory: the Jennings Brothers

NOTE: You may notice that this early snippet is littered with XX and YY references where there should be character names. Alas, I haven't figured those out yet. In fact, the MFC, currently known as "Her", will be named soon--with your help. I'll be running the Name That Character Contest next week for Her name.

Read this teaser for inspiration to come up with your submission to the contest!

Chapter 1

Her

I bang on the apartment door for the third time, starting to get the tiniest bit worried because the clock in my head is ticking away and my first class starts in thirty minutes. And so does men’s hockey practice.

Maybe I missed him. But would he have left my roommate behind?

The door finally swings open and a tall gangly guy, XX, who plays goalie stands there in sweats, holding a cup of coffee. My first instinct is to take the mug from him and gulp it down, but I go with my second, more righteous instinct. My real purpose for being here.

“I’ve come to pick up my roommate, YY.”

He grins, looking me over. “Sorry to disappoint you, but I think you have the wrong address.”

“Does Rory Jennings live here?”

He smirks, “Sure, but I think he’s already occupied—unless you’re here for a threesome?” His expression changes miraculously fast. His eyes sparkle and his grin gives big-bad-wolf vibes. I expect to see drool dripping from his mouth any second.

Giving an exaggerated eyeroll, I hope it makes up for the blush I feel creeping up my neck in a hot wave.

Without waiting for my response, he steps aside and shouts into the apartment. “Rory you have a visitor.”

I take a reluctant step forward into the entryway as a door somewhere down the hallway bangs open. We both look in that direction.

“What’s all the shouting about?”

Holy shit.

A tall tanned, well-muscled guy—as in if Hercules had a younger leaner brother—emerges from the shadowy hallway, walking straight toward me. It’s Rory.

And he’s stark naked.

And showing off his morning wood in all its glistening glory.

I shout at myself to look away, or shut my eyes as his roommate laughs.

Rory pushes his unruly mop of hair from his face and our eyes meet, connecting like two bolts of lightning striking each other so hard I feel the sizzles down to my very core.

He stops cold, freezing in place.

I maintain my wide-eyed stare hoping I don’t look like I feel—like a little girl who walked in on an orgy--because maybe I have. Except I’m not a little girl, I remind myself, at least not in years. But maybe in experience. Shit.

His mouth curve with deliberate ease, taking its time to end in the sultry smile.

Holy hot-man-on-campus. My panties suddenly feel so wet that I wonder if this means I’m not a virgin anymore?

“Hello there, Sugar. Did you come to join the party?” He looks me up and down with pussy-slayer blue eyes, a dimple in his strong chin and the kind of lush wavy hair my fingers need to dive through while I hold him against my—stop it.

In an attempt to rescue myself from permanent perverted scarring like it’s an epidemic headquartered in this apartment, in his bedroom to be exact, I blurt out the first nonsense my speech center can grasp onto in the chaos of my mind.

“Aren’t you going to be late for hockey practice?”
