“Towards better” is a noble aim, it could be better conversions or perhaps better work conditions, whatever it is, it pays to think about what “better” means.

I sat in on a Coach Education meeting last week where the question was: “How do we create a better coach education strategy?”

Hands up, I struggled. We pushed and pulled the issue around, dropped a few buzzwords in, and then the timer went off and we all went our separate ways.  

What was really going on?

It was a poor question - and rather than spend our time figuring out a better one, we pressed on, dancing around the issue. 

And if you want to know the difference between a plan and a strategy - there it is. A plan says here we are, this is what we have got, let’s crack on, a strategy says hang on “What are we doing here?

I’ll leave you with the redesign of Coach Camp for 2025 - it’s much more likely to fail since the change is to put the challenge in the lap of every coach who attends - “What are you working on now?” but as I learned last week - better to fail, and fail fast than look like we are working when we are going around in circles.
