In the moment

Folks,
If you have ever read a book, eager to get to the end, or the exciting bit, you will know how hard it can be to be present and focus on the now, the thing that needs your attention, not the thing that is pulling you along.
That’s where I was last week – trying not to get ahead of myself, dreaming of big plans or worrying about what might not be. As simple as it sounds, being present is hard work, at least for me.
Would the quality of my work improve if I could master being present? Do I have the guts to be so present that I don’t worry about how I’m going to make XYZ work, trusting that somehow it will all work itself out?
It’s a hell of an ask. Not a trifling matter. For now, it’s got my attention – I’ll start by taking my time to read my own stuff.
In 2008, Kevin Kelly wrote this blog article, 1000 True Fans. In short, you don’t need a large customer base or even a huge social media following to do the thing you want to do, but you might need 1000 true fans to make a living - people who love what you do. Of course, you could still try out being famous to see how it sits, or drive yourself mad trying.
It can all start with the power of one – you. I’m not even sure you need to like the stuff you create (you might be telling yourself it's not good), but in the end, you will need the courage to share it.
I’m going to leave you with one of my favourite clips about acting – or coaching, teaching, managing, being a parent. You get the idea: “all the world’s a stage, and all the men and women are merely players.”
Have a great week,
Simon
