The Amateur, Professional, and the Master.

Folks,

I’m going to start with a quote that rocked my world this week.

I was on a call with my writing group, and we were talking about what was holding us back as writers. One of the creatives put forward a very persuasive argument that we were just playing at it compared to someone like Terry Pratchett. We talked a little more, and then the same person dropped this quote, which changed his mind and blew mine:

“Amateurs worry about equipment, professionals worry about money, masters worry about light. I just make pictures…” Vernon Trent.

It’s not about how good you are, what kit you have to play with, or your status. What matters in that moment, whether it’s writing, taking a photo, or playing the piano, is this: are you ready to seize the opportunity? Or will you let constraints or status get in the way of being present and being yourself?

I’m not Terry Pratchett, and I doubt you are Mario Testino, but you can move from amateur to master by simply taking the opportunity not to get in your way.

This leads me nicely to a business that makes its money by helping people get out of their way. Play Netball connects individuals who want to play netball to teams and leagues in the local area. A staggering 66% of players have come to Play Netball as individuals, not as part of a team or friendship group, with 35,000 players registered in 150 locations across the UK.

This is further proof, if proof were needed, that constraints like money and time, or status, are not what hold us back if we are ready to acknowledge and then design for them.

Have a great week,

Simon
