Teenage Kicks

Folks,
I’ve started reading the book Unreasonable Hospitality, not because it was my first choice, but because it's bright yellow, sits on Lins' side of the bed, not being read—what was I supposed to do!
At the heart of this book is the question: What would you do if you couldn’t fail?
I’d have asked out Kathryn Strodinski in Lower Sixth!
Which brings me on to Kickstarter campaigns. The interesting thing about this crowdfunding platform is that we focus on how to make it work, when I think the real power is in trying something that might fail. Why? Because the Kickstarter campaign failed, not you.
Let me give you an example.
Next year, I'm launching a pack of 52 cards called Coach Deck. The idea is that these cards provide prompts for coaches to talk about their coaching, the culture of the club they coach at, and what they're working on.
For example:
♥ HEARTS: Identity & Purpose (13 cards)
Origin Story
What originally drew you into coaching? How has your coaching changed over time?
Now, I could just press ahead, print up a load of cards, and start selling the idea. Maybe hedge my bets a little and play safe. But with Kickstarter, I can go all in, make promises that stretch the possible, and try things out. If the Kickstarter doesn't fund, no money changes hands, and we get on with our day.
What do you need to design in your life that would help you go all in without worrying about failing?
For coaches, I think it starts with getting your story straight—knowing why you do what you do, and what your practice stands for. If you know a coach, teacher, or instructor wrestling with these questions, my book Good Coach Bad Coach is a good place to start.
If you bought my book this week, thank you for supporting my work. And if you shared the link with those who you think might enjoy it, thank you too.
Have a great week,
Simon
P.S. If anyone knows Kathryn, say hello, but don’t mention the crush!
