Go when it’s green

Folks,

There can’t be many people left on this planet who haven’t recently had a conversation about Zone 2 training – those fat-burning steady-state efforts that you can sustain for an hour or so. Many years back, I spent a lot of my time telling athletes who wanted to go faster to:

  • Go faster for shorter periods
  • Go slower for longer periods.

Most were caught punching out at effort levels that were either nowhere near fast enough or slow enough to bring about the metabolic and muscular changes that were required for improved performance.

Alan Couzen reminds us that your whole day is a workout. If you sit at a desk, do little else, and then belt it at the gym or running track, we have two bumps – a “guilt” bump and a sedentary bump, with nothing much in between.

You know what to do – get rid of the bumps and move more.

Talking about things in the middle…..what about Amber at the traffic lights?

Green for go, red for stop. But what about amber? “Maybe”? In reality, it’s simply a signal that conditions are shifting from favorable (green) to unfavorable (red).

Today, I finally pushed a project forward that had been on red for a long time. It got me thinking about when we decide we are good to go. Are we waiting for the perfect moment, or just when it’s “good enough”? And if it’s “good enough,” what does that truly mean, because it’s not amber; it’s still undeniably green.

Green means go, and when you do, it’s time to put your foot down!

Here's to a great week,

Simon
