Perspective Is Everything
There are moments in life that gently remind us that the way we choose to see a situation can completely transform our experience.
Recently, I was reminded once again that Perspective is Everything.
It started when I received a notice from my daughter’s school that they would be celebrating Grandparents’ Day. My emotions were mixed. As someone who doesn’t have parents anymore and with my husband in the same situation, the idea of a day devoted to grandparents stirred something in me.
I didn’t say anything to my husband, but inside, I felt a quiet ache.
I wondered how it would feel to sit among parents who still had the gift of older generations present. I wondered if I even wanted to go. But I also knew one thing for sure: I didn’t want my daughter to experience the absence of a parent on a day that mattered to her.
So, one of us had to attend.
On the actual day, my husband couldn’t make it due to other commitments. As I got dressed alone, I made a few decisions that would shift everything:
- I decided to make the day memorable.
- I decided to lead with love instead of loss.
- I decided to celebrate our parents, not mourn their absence.
Every single item I wore that morning carried meaning. Each piece was a gentle tribute to her grandparents—my parents and my husband’s parents. It became my quiet way of bringing them into the room with us, honoring their stories through presence rather than absence.
My top was my father’s favorite color. My scarf held sentimental weight. And tucked in my daughter’s hand was her grandmother’s bracelet, something small, yet deeply symbolic.
And you know what? In the end, it turned out to be a truly beautiful day.
We took pictures, made memories, laughed, and participated joyfully. What could have been heavy became light. What could have been sorrowful became meaningful. What could have been a day of emotional withdrawal became a day of emotional gratitude.
All because of one shift: Perspective.
It reminded me that we truly do choose how we show up.
You can see your glass as half full or half empty.
You can focus on what is missing or on what remains.
You can allow a moment to define you, or choose to define the moment.
That day, perspective changed everything for me.
Instead of an emotional burden, it became a personal landmark… one I’ll always remember.
And I hope this also serves as a gentle reminder for you today that you get to choose how you see the moments that life brings.
In life, no matter what you’re walking through, choose your perspective.
Instead of focusing on what you don’t have, pause and ask yourself - What do I have right now? And how can I use it to move forward from here?
Maybe it’s time. Maybe it’s the small window you get after school drop-off. Maybe it’s the discipline of a morning walk. Maybe it’s your current job—even if it isn’t your dream—still shaping you, building you, preparing you.
Don’t disqualify yourself by believing you don’t have enough.
We are all equipped with something — tools, experiences, strengths, and even detours that will serve us later.
That’s my heart for you this week: Shift the lens. Choose the perspective that gives life. And trust that God has already given you more than you think.
