NHF Quick Tips

Hello Friends!

I wanted to send out a couple of quick tips that I think may be helpful to you as they have been for me.

TIP #1

When eating a meal high in carbohydrates, limit your dietary fat intake at this time.

Why? Carbs cause an increase in blood sugar (glucose). The liver and muscles will store what they can in the form of energy (glycogen). Once glycogen stores are full, the body will continue to prioritize oxidation of the glucose that is in the blood. Any dietary fat present will go directly to fat stores (adipose tissue).

TIP #2

Concentrate your carbohydrate consumption after exercise.

Insulin's job is to bring glucose into cells causing fat storage. However, muscle contractions cause glucose to be brought into cells even without insulin. This is why insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake are usually better after exercise, and why exercise helps keep us metabolically healthy.

Have a great week!
