The Chai Times // Finder's Keepers, Events
Aug 21, 2021 3:09 am
"Finders keepers losers weepers" is certainly not a Jewish adage. In this week's Torah portion we are instructed to return an object we found to its rightful owner, and the laws surrounding this mitzvah.
We find (again!) where a widely accepted ethical practice - the lost and found area - originates in the Torah.
True, there's nothing like getting back a lost wallet but there's something profoundly deeper here as well.
We each are a crucial and irreplaceable part of G-d's plan. This includes refining myself and everything I own. If something goes missing, I can't imbue it with divinity. And neither can you because it is not your's to refine. Therefore you must return it to me.
This is the inner reason why we amass physical possessions - to make holy the spark of G-dliness inside.
We each have our work cut out... Let's get to it!
Shabbat Shalom!
