The Chai Times // Seder - Sell Chametz - Freedom

This Is The Time.

Passover is the most celebrated Jewish holiday in the world. Countless Jews gather with their friends, families and loved ones to celebrate the Festival of our Deliverance.

This year, there are those who are not yet free to celebrate with their families. 133 hostages remain in captivity in Gaza.

But innumerable others also will not be at the seder - Jews who may not have the privilege or ability to attend.

We want to change that. In the 1970s, when some Jewish organizations suggested placing an empty chair at Seder tables in protest to the plight of Jews trapped in the Soviet Union, the Rebbe spoke out publicly, instead urging world Jewry to add chairs and fill them in merit of those unable to attend.

YJP is proud to do our part to make sure that every Jew has a #SeatAtTheSeder

Join us this Passover, in inviting other Jews to your Seder, and helping us invite them as well!

YES the Seder is THIS Monday Night

(Don't freak out, you can join us or make one with your friends)

Sell Your Chametz

On the holiday of Passover, we are commanded not to have any chametz in our possession. Any food made out of grain that has been allowed to rise (ferment) is chametz. Common chametz items include bread, cakes, breakfast cereals, pastas, many liquors, and more. Any chametz that was in the possession of a Jew during Passover is forbidden, even after Passover ends. This applies even if the chametz is locked up and out of sight.

So what is someone to do if they want to hold on to their prized Scotch collection or freezer full of challah?

The solution (as explained in the Code of Jewish Law, O.C. 448) is the “Sale of Chametz,” in which the food is sold to a non-Jew before Passover. After the holiday, the non-Jew sells it back, and it can once again be enjoyed.

the Meaning of the Rebbe's Birthday

Every year on the Rebbe’s birthday, 11 Nissan, four days before Passover, Chabad individuals celebrate the milestone by fanning out around large cities worldwide to meet other Jews in the streets. They offer the men a chance to put on tefillin, Shabbat candles for the women, and everyone gets a package of handmade shmurah matzah for their Seders.

The Rebbe lived to serve the Jewish people; these activities on his birthday are exactly the kinds of gifts he would want. Of course, this is not limited to the Rebbe’s birthday; it is something that Chabad boys and girls often do, but the 11th of Nissan is the highlight of our relationship with the Rebbe—the Rebbe’s personal day—and what better way to observe it than by doing what the Rebbe loved?

Nearly 30 years after his passing, we still celebrate the Rebbe’s birthday, and his inspiration is why my family and I live here and why our home is open to every Jew.

It’s what drives us to deliver shmurah matzah to as many people as possible, to encourage people to do just one more mitzvah, and to represent the Rebbe in our part of the world. We are inspired by the Rebbe and want to make him proud.

All the activities of our Chabad House, as well as every Chabad outpost around the world, are our birthday present to the Rebbe. And if you are involved with Chabad, or make an effort to reach out to other Jews, you are also part of this legacy.

Happy birthday, Rebbe! L’chaim!
