Thought for the week:
What is consolation?
Surface-level consolation is when the anger and suffering have ended and the pain has passed.
True consolation is much deeper.
True consolation does not mean that everything is healed and now we are back together.
True consolation means to know, to deeply be aware, that the anger and the wrath were nothing less than passionate, deep love; that all our troubles were really achieving something wondrous beyond our imagination.
That it was all worthwhile, really worthwhile.
This Shabbat is called the Shabbat of consolation. The Haftorah begins with the prophet Isaiah delivering a message from G-d. In the future, he tells us, we will be doubly consoled.
In true consolation, we look back and we can no longer find anything for which we must be consoled.
One day, we will find only joy and laughter. In the present and even in the past.
