🍎🍯 Dont miss Rosh Hashana Services or the New Year's Brisket Dinner!

This week's Torah portion, Ki Tavo, describes how at the end of the 14 years they were taught the annual Mitzvah of Bikkurim. A ceremony when the farmer would bring the first produce of their field as a gift to the Holy Temple.

An expression of gratitude for the beautiful Land of Israel they received.

But what about those who secured their portion of the land early? Surely their fields were yielding fruit earlier than 14 years. Why weren't they expected to bring Bikkurim and display their gratitude as soon as they enjoyed their fruit?

The lesson is profound and fundamental. No one can truly rejoice if their sister is rootless. No one is considered settled if their brother still wanders.

You are home only when everyone is home.

--

These words are particularly resonant in these weeks in light of recent national events. We are not a group of individuals that happen to live alongside each other, we are responsible for each other, and the joys and sorrows of our neighbors shoud affect us deeply.

Shabbat shalom,

Rabbi Mendy & Mussy Levertov
