Thought for the week:

“And you,” says G‑d to Moses, “shall command the children of Israel that they bring to you pure olive oil crushed for the light, to raise an everlasting flame.”

The Talmud says: “Just as the olive yields light only when it is pounded, so are man's greatest potentials realized only under the pressure of adversity.”

Purim was a time of existential crushing. The Jewish people had Haman's sword on their necks, they had no obvious escape route. At this lowest moment, they discovered the bright light of their faith, they refused to capitulate. 

When your back is against the wall, that is when you can access your essence, and “raise an everlasting flame.”
