Sex Positive You: Issue 45

Sex Positive You

Hi loves,

Happy Hispanic Heritage month!

I hope you're all feeling grounded as we transition into this new season. September has been an exciting month for me, and I wanted to share some of the highlights, reflections, and upcoming opportunities with you.

Why I have been MIA (skip if not here for personal stuff)

Alfredo and I left Veracruz in early August and I am desperately looking forward to settling in Puerto Rico in a couple of weeks. Since leaving Veracruz we were in Indiana for a couple of weeks and have been bouncing between New York and Connecticut since. Tomorrow we leave for Tennessee, then CT for a day before flying to Puerto Rico but I only get to stay for 2 days before flying back out. Sleeping in the same bed for more than 3 nights will be INCREDIBLE.

I am still chugging along on my dissertation as well as preparing workshops, research talks, and faculty/postdoc applications to support getting this research out into the world. I recently received another grant rejection for my Latine virtual museum idea so if you know of grants interested that would support the curation of stories into an online platform, please share!

Once I'm settled, I'll be returning to substack and Instagram with educational material but until then, you can find me randomly sharing my thoughts on threads (though I can't promise it will be educational).

Almost forgot! Yesterday was my birthday :) I celebrated 1.5 months early in Mexico with family, got to celebrate on Saturday with fam, and will be celebrating one last time in Puerto Rico once settled. Yesterday, I worked on these jerky deadlines while wearing a birthday crown. I'm someone who loves to be celebrated but simultaneously struggles to be celebrated so let this be a reminder that you deserve the love coming at you and that you can schedule celebration on your own timeline.

Some blogs to check out

It's true, I don't have new blogs out this month BUT since you probably haven't read them all yet, I want to highlight some oldies but goodies:

  1. 15 Latine/x Sex Educators You Ought to Know
  2. Sex and Sexuality Lessons from Latines
  3. From Birthday Blues to Birthday Gratitude (something I wrote for my birthday last year that helped some folks)

Reflecting on the Workshops

I've done workshops at the first Midwest Love Fest, 10th Sex Down South, and with Equitas Health since our last newsletter.

Alfredo and I co-facilitated a workshop for the first time at Midwest Love Fest and it was on authentic consent for fawners or people pleasers. People shared enthusiastically about their own realizations, practices, and growth in overcoming fear responses and many walked away with new tools and relational awareness.

Earlier this month, I also had the honor of facilitating the "(Re)Learning to Listen to Your Body" workshop at Sex Down South. It was an incredibly humbling experience, where participants explored ways to reconnect with their bodies and break free from the societal noise that tells us how we *should* feel or behave. We explored everything from tuning into physical sensations to embracing the ebb and flow of desires. I'm still processing some of the beautiful moments we shared, and it left me thinking about how often we need to relearn what our bodies are trying to tell us, especially when it comes to intimacy, consent, and self-love. I’ll be expanding on these themes in future workshops and probably on substack (once I'm resettled) and would love to hear from you if there’s a topic you’d like to dive deeper into.

Lastly, I did my signature workshop, "You are Enough, Love: Interrogating Your Narrative" for Equitas. If you haven't had the pleasure, it's a process I offer with clients and in workshop form and for which I have a freebie you can try. I also have a partially drafted book, too but that baby is on hold until I finish all the rest of my goals!

Upcoming Workshops & Events

I'm flying out to Tennesse Tech tomorrow to give a workshop on Wednesday, "Sexuality and Self-Awareness: Knowledge is Power Workshop" and a research talk on Thursday, "Body, Belonging, Race, Fetishization, and Sex: Creating a Research Project that Speaks to What You Want to See in the World." If you're in the area, I welcome you to join as they are free to the public!

I'm so grateful for the opportunity to keep bringing these conversations to different spaces!

Interested in hosting something near you? Drop me a line and let’s make it happen!

Un abrazo,

Yael

P.S. If you're new here, don't forget to check out my blog posts and substack. There’s always more to explore!
