Are Visa's still a thing?
May 11, 2025 9:01 am
Hi there,
If you’re thinking about taking your family on an adventure through Asia in 2025 (great choice, by the way), there’s one thing you really want to get sorted early—visas. Most countries allow you to apply for a visa up to 3 months prior to travelling.
Some countries are super easy, and others need a little paperwork or pre-approval before you arrive. It all depends on your passport, destination, and how long you plan to stay. Some countries like Cambodia even have an app where you can upload a scan of your passport and few details and your done.
Here’s a quick breakdown to help you start planning:
Countries in Asia that usually require a visa (or advance approval):
🛂 China – Most travellers need a visa in advance. This is changing rapidly with many countries now allowed in with a visa on arrival. It can take a bit of paperwork, but it’s worth it—China is full of epic experiences for families.
🛂 India – You’ll likely need an e-visa before you go. The process is online and fairly quick, but do it at least a few days in advance.
🛂 Vietnam – Many nationalities need a visa or e-visa (valid for up to 90 days). Some countries get visa-free entry, but only for short stays.
🛂 Nepal – Easy to get a visa on arrival for most travelers, but you can also apply online. Great for hiking and adventure-loving teens.
🛂 Bhutan – Travel here is only possible through an approved tour package, and that includes your visa. Definitely one for a guided trip.
Places where many travelers don’t need a visa (or can get one on arrival):
✅ Japan – Visa-free for many nationalities (like Australians, Americans, Canadians, etc.) for up to 90 days.
✅ South Korea – Also visa-free for a bunch of countries for short stays.
✅ Thailand – Visa-free or visa on arrival for many, but check your country’s rules—some stays are capped at 30 days. Newly updated you now need to pre log your details online through a portal before arriving in Thailand.
✅ Indonesia (including Bali) – Most travelers get a visa on arrival for around $35 USD. Super easy.
✅ Malaysia & Singapore – Visa-free entry for most Western passports, usually for 30–90 days.
✈️ Top Tip: Even if a country offers visa-free travel, always check their latest entry rules, especially if you’ve got teens with different passports or dual citizenship. Things can change quickly, and being safe is better than scrambling at the airport!
