Hi everyone,
I hope you're having a great week. This week I'm officially off of quarantine and ready to rejoin the world. I'm getting my first vaccine shot soon so yay for that. I also made a teeny tiny bit of progress with the emotion witch story and feeling pretty good about how it's progressing. I'll be doing a livestream this Sunday on my YouTube channel in an attempt to motivate me to actually get words on paper this week, so if you want to check it out, I'll be posting a pinned link on Twitter sometime today if you want to come join me for some writing and chatting. You don't have to be a writer to join. All are welcome. You can use the sprints for cleaning, homework, or whatever else you want to get done.
On a more serious note, in this week's life lesson, don't assume. A now ex editor of mine gave unwarranted advice on how to use my genderfluid character's pronouns. They assumed I'm Cisgender (this means identifying with the gender corresponding with your sex assigned at birth) but I'm genderfluid kind of like my character Iris (and I listen to sweater weather if ya know what I mean). When I tried to jokingly bring up their mistake, they didn't apologize.
It's okay to make mistakes, but make sure to apologize and do better in the future.
And you're always welcome to ask me questions about being part of the LGBTQ+ community (or the Jewish community since I'm Jewish too) as long as you're respectful about it.
And, in other news, I got to around page 68 in the editing stages. I'm chugging along. For those of you that opted in to receive the book a few chapters at a time, keep an eye out for an email from me tomorrow with a google doc link and some questions to answer once you've finished reading.
And today I have the first page of chapter two. If you want to read the whole chapter, I'll have a google docs link at the end of the excerpt. Enjoy!
Amy's Rebellion Chapter 2 (Post Developmental edits)
The temperature in the apartment quickly climbed, and Amy opened a window in her bedroom to see an entire row of houses blacked out. It fried the power in the entire neighborhood. Great.
Amy lay down on the floor next to Garnet. "At least I didn't have to replace my sliding door like last time you visited."
Garnet turned her head to meet Amy’s gaze. "We can get Naru to help you repair the electricity tomorrow if it's not back up by then. Do you want to stay at my place for now?"
Amy held out a hand. "Let’s try to keep Naru out of this. You know how she can get.”
Garnet batted her eyelashes. “Are you concerned about her flirting with you or getting captured?”
Amy flushed. “Both. It’s not easy to keep her out of harm’s way if we’re together. And she has a tendency to run right into the fray when I get in trouble.”
Garnet shrugged. “I mean personally it should be Naru’s decision if she wants to take the risks that come with being with you, but I know that’s not what you want to hear. Anyway, you didn’t answer my question, are you coming over to my place?”
Amy rubbed at her sore arms. “Yes. I'll get up and pack my things in just a second." The cold tile felt amazing on her sore muscles. Doing that many spells back to back especially when they weren't your specialty was tiring. For several minutes, she laid on the tile floor, waiting to regain enough energy to move again.
Garnet was the first to rise. She rolled herself up into a crouch and stood up. "I know you're tired, but let's get going. It might be best for you to stay at my house tonight since the assassin knows where you live. He might try to come back tonight looking for you."
Amy nodded and rolled onto her side to push herself up. She went to her room to grab a large duffel bag and shoved work supplies into it: some needle nose pliers, a crimper, some beads, earring hooks, some crystals and wire to wrap them. Amy glanced at the sauntering iron on her worktable but didn’t move to grab it. I’m not risking a massive bill after the last time I fell asleep working and set the hotel carpet on fire. Then I’d be on the run from Opal and Garnet.
She plopped the rest of her supplies into the side pocket of the black duffel bag and then threw in purple pajamas and an outfit for tomorrow.
After 20 minutes of loud tapping outside her bedroom, Garnet threw Amy’s bedroom door open. "Are you ready yet?"
Amy gestured to the bag. "Yup. I just need to zip this up and then we can go."
Garnet raised an eyebrow. "Well, I'm sure you're a responsible adult but just in case. Did you pack a hairbrush, toothbrush, toothpaste?"
Amy gave a sheepish grin and Garnet ran a hand over her face. "I figured as much. Let me guess you forgot deodorant too? I swear you'd lose your head if it weren't attached."
