Hi everyone,
I hope you're having a great week. I have a few new updates for you including an upcoming price drop. "Rose is Spellbound" is being dropped down to $0.99 from Feb. 1st-5th.
On the writing front, I'm now on Chapter 7 edits for Amy's Rebellion, so I thought I'd share another excerpt for you. This one centers on Amy and her sister, Garnet.
Garnet and Amy-Cockroach?!
Garnet pushed a stray strand of hair behind her ear and picked up the pace. "Well the faster you walk, the faster we’ll get there. Hurry up or you'll have to sleep on the street like you did when you first ran away to this world."
Amy shuddered and raced after her. "That's not funny! Don't even joke about that." Garnet stuck her tongue out at Amy. “I can’t believe you’re the older sister." Amy raced after her and grabbed her arm.
She laughed and shook Amy off. "But in all seriousness we're here." Garnet nodded her head towards the "Motel" sign. The "M" light was out making it read at “Otel.”
Amy shook her head. "You couldn't have found a nicer place to stay?"
She sighed. "You might be a successful jeweler now but I'm still working for the Renaissance Festival. They don't exactly pay well."
Amy wrinkled her nose thinking back to the nights they’d spent camping in the dusty outdoors during the festivals. "Fair point. Well, let's go in."
They clomped up the creaky metal stairs and pushed open the scratched up wooden door to her room which had been left slightly ajar. "Sorry the door doesn't close correctly." She waved it off and led them both into the room.
Amy sneezed and it kicked up a cloud of dust. Her gaze lingered on a reddish brown stain on the carpet near the bed. Garnet's clothing was strewn about the room. A wet towel was draped over a chair.
Amy screeched when a cockroach scuttled through the room. “You didn’t warn me about roaches. You know I hate roaches!” She jumped up onto the bed gripping the banister with white knuckles. How could she manage living like this?
Garnet's gaze scanned the room and when the roach got close she stomped on the insect. Amy shuddered when she heard the squish. “You’ve been living in Florida these things are everywhere. I thought you’d be used to them by now.” Garnet said and slid off her black boots. "I'm just going to wash this off. You can go ahead and put your bag anywhere."
Amy plopped her bag down on the small office chair in the corner and the legs wobbled under the weight but didn't collapse. Next she stripped the covers off and threw them onto the dresser.
She dumped out the jewelry making supplies from her overnight bag and heard the shower turn on as a black crop top, jeans, and black boots got tossed out of the bathroom door.
Garnet squeaked and poked her head out of the door. "Hey can you pass me one of my boots? I found that other roaches buddy."
Amy slid out of bed and handed her the boot through the bathroom door before slamming the door shut so it wouldn’t escape.
“Thanks." Garnet gave a tight lipped smile and yelled. "Die evil cretin!" through the thin bathroom walls.
Amy covered her mouth to stifle a laugh that shook her shoulders, but her smile faded as she thought back on the necklace and her doubts about them being sisters.
Every time she’d asked their mother, Sardonyx, about it she'd always smile and say, "You're special, but you're my child just like Garnet and Selenite." before running off to another clan for supplies or heading to the human world to get human technology for their import business.
Amy crawled back into bed and grabbed her phone and looked up to look up a video tutorial on how to make a butterfly wire cage, but when she went to connect to the internet a home page asking for a password popped up.
Amy ran a hand along the nightstand, rifled through the drawers of the work desk, and scoured the countertop near the beaten up box of a television but didn’t find anything with the password. “Ugh. Where did she put it?” She gave several loud raps on the door until she heard the water shut off, and Garnet thumped to the door.
Her dripping wet head poked out.“ Is there something I can help you with? I was kind of in the middle of something.”
"Hey where's the wifi password? I need the internet for work."
Garnet flicked wet hair out of her face. "The password is just my name and the hotel room number 325. If you forget, the password is in my bag by the bed. Now let me finish my shower in peace."
She slammed the door shut so quickly that Amy rushed back to avoid getting smacked in the nose.
A loud bang that sounded like a gunshot cut through the honks and hums of the nearby highway. It could have been a car backfiring or fireworks, but it sounded a little too close for comfort, so Amy fastened the chain to the door and then put the wobbly chair with her suitcase in front of it for good measure. Someone in the hotel shouted, "I'm gonna kill you when I get my hands on you," and she peeked out the window to see a man stumbling drunk to a woman holding a liquor bottle. “You’re cut off.” she giggled and left him behind in the hallway.
END OF EXCERPT
Now, I have a question for you.
What's an animal that creeps you out?
Cockroaches. Just like Amy, they freak me out.
That's all I've got for you today. Have a great day and stay safe.
Sincerely,
Julia
