Discipline is a Bi*ch

Discipline is a bi*ch. Well, not really, but it’s hard… Or so it seems.

Hi ,

Do you know how difficult it is to get yourself to do something that brings you closer to achieving your goals? Of course you do; everyone has struggled with discipline at some point in their life. Your mind may want to learn a new skill, but your body wants to watch Netflix instead.

“The mind is willing, but the body is weak.”

What if discipline doesn't have to be so difficult? Maybe it's difficult because you overthink it. A study of successful people showed that those considered disciplined are not the ones doing difficult things, but those who find ways to make difficult things easier.

You see, the limitation to discipline is your body. It wants enjoyment, 24/7. To become a master of discipline, you need to break down your seemingly difficult-to-achieve goals into smaller pieces that your body can handle on a daily basis.

Context: I googled "Why do I even need discipline?"

Today, I will outline four steps that can help you accomplish your goals more easily and master discipline.

Step 1: Define Your Goal

Take some time to reflect on your long-term aspirations. What do you want to achieve? Write it down and keep it in sight. This reminder will serve as your guiding star.

Step 2: Set S.M.A.R.T. Goals

Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound (S.M.A.R.T.) goals. Break down your larger goal into smaller, manageable goals. Each goal should be clear, quantifiable, realistic, aligned with your larger goal, and accompanied by a deadline. These smaller goals will serve as your roadmap.

Step 3: Develop Daily Habits

As mentioned in my last email, discipline is not a one-time effort but a series of consistent actions. Identify the habits that will bring you closer to your goal and commit to practicing them every day. This could include dedicating just 10 minutes to reading, learning, exercising, or working on a specific skill. These simple habits will add up over time and reinforce discipline. Start small and gradually build momentum. Your daily habits will serve as your system.

Step 4: Establish Accountability

Find an accountability partner. Someone who shares similar goals. Regularly check in with them, share progress, and hold each other responsible. They will serve as reinforcement.

So, in order to master discipline, you need to identify your guiding star, develop a roadmap, build a system, and apply reinforcement. Note that it's not about perfection. If you slack off today, don't beat yourself up about it. Just make sure to do better tomorrow.

I’ll leave you with two recommendations. The first is a very popular book called “Atomic Habits” by James Clear. It will change your life, I promise.

The second is an insightful TED talk on procrastination that you can watch here.

Great talk. Until next week, keep pushing toward your goals.

Best,

Viki 💜
