As you might have noticed, a huge amount of lore exists online to support Arclands: The Spellforgers Companion and The Book of the Graces. The task of squeezing a universe into two 160 page books is very challenging, and so we continued to add content to our World Anvil page over the years.

Yesterday we checked out Tarkenmyst in the Celestial Realm and I laid out the bones of a campaign that I'll continue developing in the near future. Today I want to take you back in time to the beginning of the Arc Empire. You can check out the timeline of Arcish Emperors and Protectors here, (a rough chronology that relates to Arc - there are other timelines coming that tell the stories of everywhere else).

This article takes us back in time to the reign of Dures II (-2172 to -2140), a time of great upheaval when the Vannic Empire was crumbling and the Arcish Empire was just beginning to emerge. During this tumultuous era, a group of scholars known as the Esoteric Heretics made a daring discovery. They realized that as the Keeper's power waned, his grip on the magical weave weakened, opening a window of opportunity for mortals to tap into the arcane.

With the help of ancient knowledge provided by the Legion of Damnation and a blood soaked entity known as The Idiot, the Esoteric Heretics embarked on a daring mission to create the Memnarch Device—an artificial spellforge capable of leeching magic directly from the ailing Keeper himself. This was a game-changing moment in the history of Aestis, marking the beginning of a new era of arcane knowing.
