Banned Books?

Before jumping into my thoughts regarding what might qualify a book for banishment, I want to thank everyone who signed up to receive newsletters from me, aka Vella Munn. Hopefully you recall participating in the BookSweeps giveaway for fans of Diana Gabaldon’s nine book Outlander series. Talk about outstanding books! Talk about creativity, research, and amazing world building!

I’m not going to compare my books with hers, but I am responsible for a bunch of historicals, specifically ten Native American historical romances. That qualifies me for what, tenacity? Needless to say, I deeply respect Native American traditional culture and beliefs. (Don’t let me get started on how they were treated after newcomers started showing up.)

I entered Spirit Of The Eagle in the Outlander contest in part because it’s about the Modoc Indians who lived not far from where I do. I’ve been to the Lava Beds National Monument in northern California a number of times. https://www.nps.gov/labe/index.htm While there, I open myself to the spirits of the brave men, women, and children who fought to hold onto their sacred land. Tragically, they failed, but I did everything I could to bring them back to life in fiction.

Does what I just wrote speak to you? If so, Spirit Of The Eagle is on sale for .99 everywhere. (ebook version) Here’s the Amazon link. https://www.amazon.com/Spirit-Eagle-Soul-Survivor-Vella-ebook/dp/B0BVKNM93B/ref

Spirit Of The Eagle is one of three titles in my Soul Survivor series. (I’ll soon publish book #4).

Both Seminole Song and Wind Warrior have plot elements that could lead them to being banned. Yes, I’m finally getting to the point of this newsletter.

Seminole Song revolves around the Seminole Indians in 1835. Panther is a war chief who, along with the rest of his small band, are in the Everglades hiding from the army and plantation owners. Caldia is a half-black slave on the run from her cruel owner. I don’t tiptoe around the reality of slavery. Neither do I downplay how the military and plantation owners deal with Indians then.

Wind Warrior takes place in California when the state’s missions were being built. Spanish soldiers are determined to convert the savage Chumash Indians. The Chumash are given no choice. Either they reject their historic beliefs and obey the Catholic priests or…   Black Wolf is a warrior while Lucita is the new colonel’s daughter.

I didn’t whitewash reality. I wrote my books before banning books became a thing, but I wouldn’t have changed a word. Those who lived during those tumultuous times deserve the truth.
