Happily Caught In History

Hopefully none of my newsletter subscribers (that’s you) are keeping track of how long it’s been since I sent my last newsletter. All I’m going to say is I’m shocked and not in a good way.

Starting off, I want to briefly introduce myself to the new subscribers that came my way via BookSweeps’ historical romance sweepstakes. I entered my very first historical romance, RIVER’S DAUGHTER in that sweeps. At last count, I’ve written 12 historical romances, nine of them revolving around Native Americans. Since only one of you could win a free copy of River’s Daughter, I decided to put this book of my heart up for .99 at Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Rivers-Daughter-Soul-Survivors-ebook/dp/B0C41251D9/ref=

Of course I hope you’ll take a chance on it because it represented a shift from writing contemporary romances to historicals, primarily at my agent’s suggestion/nagging. RIVER’S DAUGHTER follows southern Oregon’s Rogue Indians (particularly Dark Water) as they struggle to adjust to the appearance of newcomers, many of them gold miners. Barr, the book’s hero, is hired to help protect the miners from the Indians. He has strong reasons for hating the so-called savages, but Dark Water manages to touch his heart. She slowly realizes she doesn’t hate him, but he still represents the enemy.

Why did I chose that setting and conflict for my first historical? For one, I was living in Jacksonville Oregon, the site of Oregon’s original gold strike. My daily walks took me past the seasonal creek where the precious flakes waited to be discovered and my occasional hikes into the foothills took me to a couple of once-thriving gold mines. At the time, I was relatively newly married with a couple of wild young sons who loved the surrounding hills and nearby Rogue River as much as I did. We have wonderful memories of living in that one-horse town.

Many years later, I’m a widow with said two sons and five grandchildren to say nothing of a couple of bossy mutts. I’ve now written over 150 books both as Vella Munn and a pen name I prefer to keep under wraps because that gal has a pretty sexy side.

I hope you’ll stick around as I give you glimpses into all the places my imagination has taken me. As an example of where the muse is taking me at present, I just published the first in what will be a five book contemporary romance series called Seasons Heartbeat. ONE DAY is—well, let the Amazon listing give you an idea. I’ll just add that the setting strongly resembles the lake where my family owned a cabin for nearly 50 years. (My in-laws bought it) BTW ONE DAY it’s only .99. https://www.amazon.com/Seasons-Heartbeat-Lake-Serene-Romance-ebook/dp/B00XQ09P34/ref=
