.99 vs free

By Vella Munn

I’ve put three of my books on sale before I encourage you to check them out, I want to try to explain why I’m offering them at .99 instead of free.

The simplistic explanation is that it’s easier to lower a price on Amazon than to give something away, but that isn’t why I make the decision I did. When self-publishing first took off, we writers decided we had to in essence drop our hard work in readers’ laps (or Kindles) if we stood a chance of getting noticed.

But here’s the rub. There are tens of thousands of free books out there. Would you ever pay for a meal if you could get food gratis for the rest of your life?

But if I give my creative endeavors away, I won’t be able to keep the lights on and if the lights get turned off, I’ll have to stop writing and take a job that pays the bills. (I am working on a scheme to provide a permi-free novella as an introduction to a four book contemporary romance series. However, the novella I call One Day is the only title I anticipate giving away.)

What I am doing is try to introduce readers to two of my series by offering three titles for .99 each. I haven’t decided on an end date.

The first that’s on sale is Punish, book #1 in my Feral Justice series. Fair warning. This isn’t a light read because I turned my imagination (and several huge dogs with fangs and an agenda) loose on animal abusers. Here’s what I’m talking about. https://www.amazon.com/Punish-Primal-Justice-Vella-Munn-ebook/dp/B09PWGHGBD/ref

Heading in a different direction, I’m hopefully drawing readers’ attention to my 11 book library of Native American historicals.

First up is Spirit of the Eagle  https://www.amazon.com/Spirit-Eagle-Soul-Survivor-Vella-ebook/dp/B0BVKNM93B/ref about the small, brave Modoc tribe that spent a brutal winter holding their own against the ever-growing army force. The Modocs lived about three hours from where I do. Needless to say I made several research trips to that barren yet beautiful land.

Then there’s Soul of the Sacred Earth (I love that title) https://www.amazon.com/Soul-Sacred-Earth-Searchers-Book-ebook/dp/B07R6VMWHY/ref Set in the 1600s, this sweeping, award-winning story is about the Hopi and Navajo and how they dealt with the Spanish military. Not only did I explore Hopi reservation land in Arizona, I researched two very different tribes brought together by a common foe. Yes, there is romance in both Soul and Spirit.
