Here's Chapter One! š
Mia
My breath comes in short bursts as I near the rustic wooden door. It's everything I've imagined ā a secluded cabin embraced by towering pines, whispering secrets of adventure. I lift my hand, heart racing with the promise of escape, and knock firmly. My knuckles tap against the solid wood, the sound cutting through the serenity of the mountain air.
"Okay, Mia," I murmur to myself, trying to calm the fluttering in my chest. "This is it. Your perfect weekend retreat."
I shift from one foot to the other, anticipation curling inside me like a vine. What stories will these walls tell? What inspiration will I find here?
The door groans on its hinges and I canāt help the grin that stretches across my cheeks.
āHi there, Iāmā¦ā
I'm met with a sight that sends my pulse into overdrive. There he stands, the man of the mountain, his bare chest a canvas of defined muscle and hard work. His hair, dark and untamed, crowns him with an almost primal allure. But it's his eyes that hold me captive ā piercing blue, like chips of glacial ice, carrying an intensity that borders on wild.
"Can I help you?" His voice is a low rumble, annoyance lacing every syllable. Though he might be the most beautiful man Iāve ever laid eyes on, he seems less than pleased to see me.
I swallow hard, my excitement now wrapped in a thin veil of uncertainty. This was not the welcome I'd envisioned. No warm greetings, no friendly smiles. Just the raw presence of a man who clearly isn't pleased with my arrival.
"Hi, I'm Mia," I say, injecting a warmth into my words that I hope will thaw his frosty reception. "I'm looking forward to spending my weekend here, getting to know this beautiful place you call home."
His stature fills the doorway, a barrier to the cozy sanctuary I was expecting. Leaves whisper around us, as if listening to our exchange. His eyes narrow and his gaze burns into me like Iām his enemy.
Despite this manās standoffish demeanor, there's something about him ā a depth, a story waiting to be told.
Or maybe all I can think about is what it would be like pinned between him and the sheets.
I shake my head and swallow hard.
"Look, I'm here for the AirBnb reservation," I persist, my voice steadier than I feel. I grab the papers I printed off and hand them to him. The mountain air is sharp with the scent of pine, but it's his earthy aroma that subtly overpowers the senses.
The manās brows furrow, a crease forming on his sun-kissed forehead. "Reservation? There's no reservation." His tone is flat, the words clipped like branches sheared off by an experienced woodsman.
He eyes me up and down and my belly lights on fire. Thereās a curiosity in his gaze that excites me but I shake it off.
"Please, check again," I urge, my heart hammering against my ribs, "I've booked this place for the weekend."
"Then you've been conned," he retorts, the edge in his voice sharp as a knife blade. For a second, all my focus is wrapped up in his full lips and the way they wrap around his short words.
The door begins to swing shut, a barrier rising between usābetween possibility and rejection. Instinctively, my hand darts out, the wood cold and unyielding beneath my palm as I stop its motion. "Wait! Are you serious?"
"Dead serious," the man snaps, his eyes locking onto mine with a challenge, a storm brewing in their icy depths.
"Please..." The word escapes me, a whisper, a plea tethered to the wild hope fluttering in my chest. āThere must be some mistake. Maybe weāre double booked?ā
He growls as I yank my hand back, suddenly feeling like Iāve poked the bear.
āThis aināt no AirBnb. Get off my property before I show you off it.ā
āOh,ā I mumble. Without a barrier, this mountain of a man slams the door in my face and I jump as it shakes the wood deck beneath my boots.
My eyes slide down to the papers in my hand as I read over everything.
āThis doesnāt make any sense,ā I say. I twist and walk down the steps, looking around the property.
This is it⦠all the pictures match. A cozy little A frame cabin amongst the tall forest, the lowest on Black Smoke Peak.
I shake my head and then startle as the door bursts open again, creaking the same as before.
āHey!ā He shouts.
I hold his gaze, willing him to see the earnestness in mine. The silence stretches between us, heavy and expectant. The realization that Iām all alone up here sinks in and as I tug my phone out of my back pocket, I realize I donāt have service.
āUm, Iām sorry but would you mind if I use your phone?ā I ask. I need to call⦠the host? My sister?
Or maybe the better idea would be to get in my car and drive as far as possible away from this intense man.
"Fine," he grumbles as he steps aside, the door left ajar with a reluctant invitation. "You can stay until you figure out your... situation."
"Thank you," I breathe out, relief flooding through me.
I run up the steps and cross the threshold, my boots thudding against the worn wooden floor.
The cabin envelops meāa sanctuary carved out of the wilderness. My eyes dart around, taking in the rustic charm. Low ceilings with exposed beams, a tartan throw draped haphazardly over a leather armchair, walls lined with bookshelves crammed with well-thumbed novels and knick-knacks.
There it is, the heart of the room: a fireplace, its stones darkened from years of use, the flames inside dancing merrily. Warmth radiates towards me, seeping into my chilled bones, whispering promises of comfort. The orange glow paints the cabin in a light that feels like sunset all the time, flickering shadows playing across the manās stern features, softening them.
I shuffle to the center of the room, casting brief glances at him as we both adjust to the reality of sharing space. His gaze meets mine, a spark igniting in those deep blue eyesāa silent acknowledgment of our sudden proximity. It's like watching lightning flicker on the horizon; thrilling and a bit terrifying.
"Phoneās over there. Make yourself at home," he says, though it sounds more like a command than a courtesy.
"Will do." I keep my voice light, not wanting to betray the nervous energy fizzling under my skin. The fire crackles and I canāt help but watch him as crosses the room. Instead of giving me some privacy like I expected, he turns and leans against the wall, crossing his massive arms and eyeing me.
The tension hangs heavy in the air as I pick up the phone and dial the AirBnb host. Rings echo in the quiet, mixing with the crackling fire and my racing heart.
"Hello?" The voice on the other end is chipper, unsuspecting.
"Hi, this is Mia. I rented the cabin for the weekend, but there seems to be a misunderstanding," I begin, stealing a glance at Wyatt.
The beautiful shirtless mountain man watches me closely, the lines of his body taut as if bracing himself. I feel his eyes on me, intense and searching while I navigate the conversation with forced calm.
"Sure, Mia, let me check your reservation." The host's voice is distant, tinny through the speaker.
The mountain man's footsteps approach, the floorboards creaking under his weight. He stops just within arm's reach, his scentāa mix of pine and woodsmokeāfilling my senses. The wait stretches, filled with the sound of typing on the other end of the line.
"Ah, here it is. Oh no, I'm sorry, Mia. There's been an issue with the property," the host explains apologetically.
My heart sinks, a lump forming in my throat. It isn't just about the reservation anymore. It's about the wild possibility that stands before me, encapsulated in the man whose cabin has become an unexpected refuge.
A little part of me was excited at the opportunity to share a place like this with a man⦠like him.
"What kind of issue?" I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.
"It seems that property is no longer available. Let me see what I can arrange. One moment."
The pause is suffocating. The mountain man watches me, his expression unreadable. I want to say something, anything to bridge the gap between us. But I donāt know him and he doesnāt seem interested in getting to know me.
"Uh, Mia? Unfortunately, there are no other properties up there with openings," the host delivers the news.
āOh,ā I say, my stomach sinking.
The mountain manās brows raise. A silent question.
āWait! I do have something that might open up in two days. Want me to save it for you?ā
I force a smile as my excitement dwindles. āYes, thank you.ā
āGreat.ā
He rattles off the new address and I type it in the notes of my phone, nodding to myself and pretending to be just as excited as I was about this place.
"Thank you," I manage to say, disconnecting the call.
I canāt bring myself to look at the hulking presence who has sweat trickling down my back. He's so close. Iām humiliated. But alsoā¦
Where the hell am I going to stay in the meantime?
You are appreciated! And I want to hear from YOU!
Keep reading steamy,
