Just then, the air shifts, the current of the room changing course as some guy muscles his way through the crowd. He is the type who thinks he owns the world, or at least the people in it. His hand lands heavy on her shoulder, his fingers digging in with proprietary ease.
She flinches and my gut churns.
"Let's go," he barks, loud enough to slice through the newfound silence between us.
Sarah swallows hard, the fortress in her eyes showing another crack. The moment shatters, leaving the jagged edges of reality in its wake. I clench my fists, feeling the familiar itch of wanting to intervene, knowing it isn't my fight.
"Didn't you hear me?" he snaps, giving her a rough shake. "I said, it's time to leave."
The Dive doesn't do fairy tales. But something about the way she looks at him, a mix of fear and defiance, makes me reconsider the rules. Maybe some damsels don't want to be saved, but they sure as hell don't deserve to be dragged through the dirt either.
The brute tightens his grip on her arm, his knuckles whitening as his voice turns to gravel. "We're leaving," he growls.
Sarah's frame stiffens, a doe caught in the crosshairs of a hunterâs rifle. The laughter and clinking glasses fade into a low hum as I watch the scene unfold.
"Stop," she whispers, a tremor in her voice that sets my blood ablaze. Her plea is soft and a bit broken, stirring something primal within me.
I've seen enough bullies to last a lifetime, but this? This is different.
"Please, let go of me,â she asks firmer now, but the man is a storm refusing to heed a stop sign.
He sneers, his hand shifting from her arm to the nape of her neck, pushing her forward with a force that makes her stumble. She catches herself on the edge of the bar, her knuckles turning white as she resists.
"Move it, Sarah." His words are a snarl, meant to wound.
My jaw clenches. Every instinct screams at me to stand down, to let the Dive swallow its own chaos. But those eyesâher eyesâthey plead without pride, reaching across the room and hooking into my conscience like barbed wire.
"Hey!" I bark, my voice cutting through the haze, a knife ready to draw blood. But my outburst is lost in the cacophony of drunken revelries and the jukebox's wail.
âDonât,â Grey growls behind me.
The scene plays out in slow motion; her resistance met with his brute insistence. He jerks her forward, her feet barely keeping pace as he hauls her toward the exit. Her gaze flicks to mine, a silent scream etched into her irises.
"Please," she mouths, a single word drowned by the noise but as clear as day to me.
It's the please that does itâthe crack in my armor. I'm no knight, but dammit, there are lines you don't cross. Not on my watch.
Sarah disappears through the door, the cold night swallowing her whole, the manâs bulk a shadow against the streetlights outside. It's not my fight, never was. Dark Riders donât play heroes; we ride hard, live fast, and steer clear of trouble when we can.
But tonight, trouble wears a face I can't ignore.
"Damn it," I mutter under my breath, feeling the weight of a choice that isn't really a choice at all. My boots thud on the worn wood floor, each step a drumbeat marching me toward a conflict I'll pretend to regret later.
The night air bites at my skin, but the fire in my gut keeps me warmâkeeps me moving. My boots strike the pavement with a purpose I haven't felt in a long time. The distant sound of laughter and clinking glasses from The Dive fades behind me as I stalk my preyâa man who thinks he can drag an angel through hell.
An alley looms ahead, the perfect place for shadows to do their dirty work. And there they are: him, pressing her against the wall, his hand raised and striking across her face with a sickening crack that echoes off the brick.
Fury scorches just beneath my skin.
"Hey!" My voice is a bullet, shot from the depths of a throat tight with fury. "Let her go."
He turns, surprise etched on his face, not expecting an audience to his little show of power. Sarah's eyes are wide, her cheek already blooming redâthe color of pain...the color of rage boiling in my veins.
"Who the hell are you?" he sneers, sizing me up as if I am nothing more than an annoying insect.
"Your worst nightmare if you don't take your hands off her," I spit back, my words laced with every ounce of Dark Rider venom I possess.
