Pasty Proliferation

Happy Sunday ,

Temperatures are really dropping here in Bucharest, and it's got us thinking about warm, satisfying meals. A few weeks ago, we challenged teams to name the ingredients in a traditional Cornish pasty (beef, potatoes, onions, and swede). Today, we will add some stamps to our pasty passports.

Delicious Diaspora

Due to the lack of work in Cornwall in the late 19th century, an estimated quarter million Cornishmen left Cornwall in search of a new life. Many of these emigrants were miners. There is a saying in Cornwall: A mine is a hole anywhere in the world with at least one Cornishman at the bottom of it.

Everywhere the Cornish went, pasties were sure to go

Pasty Peanuts

Outside of mining areas in America, people associate the noun "pasty" (rhyming with tasty) with nipple coverings, not food.

Cornish pasties can traditionally be made with a side crimp or a top crimp, however, due to the protected geographical indication (PGI), those Cornish bakers who favor a top crimp now find that they cannot legally call their pasties "Cornish".

The world's largest Cornish pasty (above) was made in August 2010, measuring 4.6 metres (15 ft) and weighing 860 kilograms (1,900 lb). It used 165 kg (364 lb) of beef, 82 kg (180lb) of swede, 45 kg (100lb) of potatoes and 34 kg (75lb) of onions.

Well, now we're hungry. Join us tomorrow at 8:00 PM GMT for our live quiz!
