Faith & Life Lessons – March 10, 2024

image

Welcome to the March 10th edition of Faith & Life Lessons.

You will see this email full of tidbits from my week. My goal is simple. I hope that from how I live my life, you can find a thing or two that helps you as you try to live a life that matters. I am always trying to do one thing - make Christ-focused decisions in love, work, and life. And this was my week.

The Story of My Week

During the week, I facilitated a first-of-its-kind session for a collection of teams that were coming together for the first time.

It was interesting how at the start some of the people did not see the value of all of them being together in the same room.

By the end of the session, they were all appreciating the value of collaborating with the other teams in the room.

All the teams were used to pursuing their objectives and goals without a second view from the outside. Everyone had become insular.

The meeting brought a new perspective to what each team had been doing. It also helped to create new advocates outside their team.

This is one I love to foster - a collaborative work environment.

Not just foster it but to achieve it as quickly as possible.

It makes my work as a leader easier if I am not seen as the sole hub of knowledge and wisdom.

It means I will not be the one answering all the questions.

As an added incentive, I free my time to focus on the things I am uniquely qualified to work on.

Things that no one can deliver as well as I can.

It’s not a boast.

It’s knowing my unique ability and what God had uniquely empowered me to address.

I show up every day to do this.

Things I Learnt

1-Remembering Kindness: During the week, I had some people carry out some simple tasks for me at the house.

When it came time to pay them, they were unwilling to ask for what they thought they deserved.

It made me realise that not everyone has overcome the fear of asking when there is a sense of power distance.

I guess to them, I was higher on the food chain and it was better for them to go low rather than go right on the price point.

But I was not going to be the guy who took advantage of people’s fears.

Whatever they asked, I paid more than it.

This was not a moment to teach them “you get what you ask”.

Rather, it was a time to show that someone appreciated the worth they carry.

Even if they don’t see it.

One small step, I hope it improves their sense of self-worth.

2-When God Wants to Save a Nation: It’s interesting how God forces difficult situations on a nation so that He can open the door to their redemption.

The people of Israel were comfortable in Egypt but the plan had always been for them to live in Canaan.

To inspire them to think about leaving Egypt, He gave them difficult times.

But the difficult times did not get their attention.

It wasn’t until the first Pharaoh died and they realised they might be getting a worse deal with the new guy that they cried out and their cries came up to God.

Years passed, and the king of Egypt died. But the Israelites continued to groan under their burden of slavery. They cried out for help, and their cry rose up to God. God heard their groaning, and he remembered his covenant promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He looked down on the people of Israel and knew it was time to act. Exodus 2:23-25.

Instead of complaining about things, I will pray and speak words of life over my nation.

Maybe the whole situation is God’s way of getting our attention.

He will come and save us.

Postscript

May you have the wisdom to know when God is using difficult situations to get your attention. And instead of complaining, may you turn to Him as the source of all help. Amen.
