Rewriting the Rules: How Nurturing Builds Stronger Businesses
I'd like to talk about a word that doesn’t get enough love in business: nurturing.
I know, it’s not the kind of word you’ll find plastered across LinkedIn as a “must-have leadership trait.” In fact, it’s often dismissed as too “motherly,” too “soft,” too… well, not businesslike.
But here’s the thing: that’s just another lie we’ve been fed about how business should work. Nurturing isn’t soft—it’s powerful. It’s strategic. And it’s exactly the kind of strength that builds loyal clients, thriving teams, and communities that stick around for the long haul.
For far too long, we’ve been told that only traditionally masculine traits—like dominance, competition, and authority—belong in business. Meanwhile, traits like empathy, collaboration, and nurturing were shoved into the “weakness” category. And let me tell you, it’s time to call BS on that.
Nurturing doesn’t just belong in business—it’s the ingredient that creates something truly sustainable and impactful.
What Does Nurturing Look Like in Business?
Nurturing in business isn’t about coddling people or hand-holding. It’s about creating an environment where people—whether they’re your clients, team members, or peers—feel seen, supported, and empowered to grow.
Here’s what it might look like:
- Helping a client see possibilities they couldn’t before and guiding them toward achieving their goals.
- Encouraging a team member to step into their potential (even when they doubt themselves).
- Supporting a peer by sharing your knowledge, offering advice, or even just cheering them on.
Mentoring takes it to the next level, providing deeper guidance and leadership to those who look up to you.
Why Nurturing and Mentoring Matter
It Builds Loyalty
People don’t forget the person who took the time to truly invest in them. When you nurture others, you create relationships that go beyond the transaction and last a lifetime.
It Challenges the Status Quo
In a world that still glorifies the hustle, nurturing reminds us that relationships and growth are just as important as profit.
It Multiplies Your Impact
Every person you nurture carries those lessons forward, creating a ripple effect that extends far beyond your own reach.
My Journey with Nurturing and Mentoring
I didn’t always think of myself as a nurturer in my business. Like so many women, I was taught that success meant being polished, professional, and focused solely on a professional path.
The funny thing is—nurturing came naturally to me anyway. Over time, I noticed clients weren’t just hiring me for a service; they were coming to me for guidance, for reassurance, and for someone who truly cared about their success.
I’ll never forget working with a young virtual assistant who was terrified to raise her rates. It wasn’t just about the numbers—it was about her self-worth. We worked together to not only create a pricing strategy but also shift her mindset to see the value she was bringing to the table. Watching her confidence grow was more than rewarding—it was a reminder of why I started this journey in the first place.
Nurturing isn’t about being nice for the sake of it. It’s about helping others step into their power, which in turn strengthens everything around you.
How to Embrace Nurturing and Mentoring in Your Business
If nurturing and mentoring feel overwhelming, here’s how to start small:
1.Own It
Stop apologizing for being a nurturer. Your ability to invest in others is one of your greatest strengths.
2.Be Generous with Your Knowledge
Share tips, resources, or insights that can help someone move forward.
3.Celebrate the Wins
Whether it’s a client reaching their goal or a fellow business owner landing a big opportunity, be the first to cheer them on.
4.Lead by Example
Show others what’s possible by living out the values you teach—whether that’s setting boundaries, practicing self-care, or embracing your own growth.
5.Listen Before You Speak
Sometimes, the best way to nurture someone is to simply hear what they need and meet them where they are.
The Strength of Lifting Others
Nurturing and mentoring aren’t about being “nice.” They’re about building something bigger than yourself—relationships, communities, and impact that last far beyond the work you’re doing today.
The truth is the traits we’ve been told to hide—empathy, collaboration, nurturing—are exactly what the business world needs right now. When you invest in others, you’re investing in the future of your business, your community, and yourself.
