It's Time to Stop Hiding Who We Are in Business

Let’s start with a little honesty, shall we?

How many times have you been told that to succeed in business, you need to “toughen up,” “leave emotions at the door,” or “play the game”? If you’re anything like me—and let’s face it, you probably are—you’ve heard it more times than you can count.

Here’s a story to prove my point. Years ago, I worked for a real estate attorney who was all about appearances. Anytime there was an issue with a closing—and let’s face it, real estate closings are full of surprises—he would say, “Don’t take it personally, but I’ll just blame you. It makes me look better as the man in charge.”

Seriously. Those were his exact words. 😳

I pointed out that I had spent weeks working with the people involved, building trust and relationships, and that throwing me under the bus might not go over so well. He just shrugged and said, “That doesn’t matter. What matters is looking strong and in control.”

The kicker? Every single time he scapegoated me, someone from the closing would reach out to tell me how unprofessional and downright cruel they thought it was. His lack of empathy didn’t make him look strong—it made him look like a jerk. But in his mind, admitting a mistake or showing compassion would have been a weakness.

That’s the toxic belief we’ve all been fed for far too long. The idea that traits like empathy, compassion, and vulnerability don’t belong in business, while arrogance and denial of responsibility are somehow signs of strength.

Spoiler alert: they’re not.

The truth is, those “soft” traits—the ones we’ve been taught to hide—are what build trust, loyalty, and genuine connections. They’re what make businesses thrive.

This story got me thinking about how many of us have felt the pressure to downplay the parts of ourselves that make us human, all in the name of “professionalism.” And that’s why I’m kicking off this newsletter series.

In the coming weeks, we’re going to dig deep into the feminine traits we’ve been told are un-businesslike—traits like empathy, intuition, creativity, and more. I’ll share how society has scorned these traits, reveal their hidden power in the business world, and show you actionable ways to reclaim and embrace them.

Whether you identify as a woman, are feminine-presenting, or simply feel called to embrace the balance and power of these qualities, this series is for you. The future of business isn’t about conforming or shutting down who we are—it’s about showing up as our whole, authentic selves and letting those traits shine.

So, grab a coffee (or tea, or wine—no judgment here), and let’s chat about how we can stop hiding and start thriving by bringing our full selves into the world of business.

I can’t wait to take this journey with you. Let’s reclaim our power, one trait at a time.

Here’s to owning it all—fierce and feminine,
