A Reminder About the Essential Determinants of Health

Is your inbox flooded with information about various diets and supplements you need to stay healthy? I'm amazed how complicated all these "experts" can make it seem! But I've learned that all our efforts can be less effective if we aren't taking care of the basics.

These determinants are essential for every aspect of our health and for avoiding all chronic illnesses. But I find these stats on cancer to be especially eye-opening. Only 5–10% of all cancer cases can be attributed to genetic defects, while the remaining 90–95% are related to the environment and lifestyle. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18626751/

So, staying healthy and preventing disease isn't passive; it's proactive.

It starts with simple choices in your home, at your table, in your daily rhythm.

In my training as a Terrain Advocate with Dr. Nasha Winters, we were taught that the Essential Determinants of Health include simple things like -

  • Breathing clean air.
  • Drinking clean water and staying hydrated.
  • Getting good sleep and enough sleep so we feel rested.
  • Having good nutrition and digestion, focusing on whole foods.
  • Making sure we include rest and relaxation. These are not optional!
  • Getting out in nature.
  • Having a strong social network and support system.

Of course, there are other simple choices we can make, like avoiding toxins by using "clean" body-care products, cleaning products, cookware, ingredients, etc. We can find techniques that help us manage our stress and spend more time in positive emotions. We can avoid sugar and excess carbohydrates.

And when we do get sick or are diagnosed with a chronic disease, we can use this therapeutic order approach.

  • Remove the obstacle to the cure. If you're trying to drain a bathtub but don't shut off the faucet, the results won't be good.
  • Stimulate the body's innate healing power. Are you applying the Essential Determinants from above?
  • First, use natural substances to control significant symptoms, before turning to drugs with potential side effects. Are there foods, herbs, or natural supplements that can help?
  • If you are not improving after the steps above, it may be time to bring in stronger approaches like prescription drugs, surgery, etc.
