The Real Game of Life - Are You Enjoying It?

Imagine you're planning a game night with friends. It's a fun group. There will be yummy snacks and lively music. You're looking forward to it!

What impacts the experience you have during game night? Look for the twist at the end :-)

  • Is it better if the game is easy, and you know you will always win? We usually like at least a little challenge and surprise about how things will turn out in the game.

  • Is it better if you're super competitive and get upset when you lose? It's less fun when we take things too seriously. It's usually more enjoyable when we remember that we're participating in the game to have fun, not to do better than our friends.

  • Is it better if you don't care about the game, so you don't get frustrated when things don't go your way? Having real enthusiasm and feeling involved in the game can make it more enjoyable. If we're just going through the motions, we lose the bad but also the good emotions that make the game worth playing.

  • Is it better to keep playing the same game, even if you're no longer having fun? Sometimes, we can get stuck in a rut and not realize it. Sometimes, we may need to change things up in the game if we're no longer having fun. It could be modifying the rules. It could be adding some variety to the game or switching to a different type of game.

Here's my attempt at a twist. Go back and read these bullets again, but replace the game with our lives. Do any of the messages resonate with you now?

I often feel like life can be compared to playing a game. We might not appreciate the challenges in our lives and see how they make us stronger or make our lives more interesting. We might get too competitive, caught up in the rat race, or too disengaged, zoning out. Or we might feel stuck, even bored.

Take action!! If you think of life as a game that's meant to be enjoyed, what would you do differently?
