Five Elements for Creating Your Best Life

I've been thinking more about last week's tip, "What Is Life for Anyway?"

So many experts have thought a lot about this. Martin Seligman, considered the father of Positive Psychology, believes there are five elements that can help us reach a life of lasting fulfillment, well-being, and meaning. He uses the acronym PERMA.

PERMA

P = Positive emotions – These emotions feel good, like happiness, but curiosity, serenity, gratitude, pride, and hope. They make us feel good about ourselves and our world. Note that these emotions are not just in response to what we're doing (like vacations and happy hour); they are also generated from our thoughts, such as fond memories, anticipating future fun, or focusing on things we're grateful for.

E = Engagement – When we're engaged, we're entirely absorbed in the present moment, creating a 'flow' of blissful immersion into the task or activity. This type of 'flow' or engagement increases our ability to learn, improve skills, and expand our emotional capabilities. Time flies by as we're blissfully working on a project or hobby.

R = Relationships – Relationships and social connections are some of the most important aspects of life! We are social animals that thrive on connection, love, and interactions with other people. Sure, other people can be our leading cause of stress, but we need to make time for those people who lift us up and help us be our best selves. It's worth the investment!

M = Meaning – Meaning gives us a reason for our life and a sense that life has a greater purpose. Everything is not just about us. It's also easier to put in the blood, sweat, and tears for something we believe in. We may jump to things like religion or spirituality. And these can be important, but so can being a parent, participating in a cause we believe in, or finding purpose in our work.

A = Accomplishment – Having goals and overcoming challenges in life can give us a sense of achievement, pride, and fulfillment. It builds our self-confidence and self-worth. It feels good to enjoy positive outcomes where we've had the opportunity to use our gifts and skills.

Which of these resonates the most with you? Would giving more attention to one or more of these elements increase your enjoyment and satisfaction with your life?
